Charlie Chaplin was one of the most famous stars in the history of cinema. He was certainly the most famous comic actor of the cinema. His first film was in the age of silent films. He wrote and directed nearly all his sound pictures. 查爾斯·卓別林是電影史上著名的明星之一。他的確是電影史上最著名的喜劇演員。他的第一部電影是拍攝于無聲電影時(shí)代。他的有聲電影都是他自己創(chuàng)作劇本、導(dǎo)演的。

He was born in London in 1889. His family was poor and he had a hard childhood. His father died from drinking too much. And his mother wasn’t able to look after Charles and his elder half-brother， Sid， because she was often sick in mind and had to be sent into hospital. In 1912 he left England for the U.S. and in 1914 he made his first film Between Showers. In the film， the image of tramp Shire Los， wearing a bowler hat， holding a bamboo cane， wearing boots， walking like a duck， first appeared in the film. This image became the mark of Chaplin’s comedies. And the comedies were popular in Europe and America for more than 20 years. He created his own film company in 1918. His great film included the Gold Rush， City Lights and Modern Times. These films reflect the process of Chaplin from a ordinary humanitarian to a great critical realism art master. Chaplin， with his superb performance art， expressed deep sympathy to the lower level workers， and bitter satirized the capitalist social evils.
