Zhang Dun: New Works
July 25 - September 6, 2013
Chambers Fine Art
Through a new series of drawings of peaches and bananas in colored pencil, Zhang Dun reveals sensitivity to the forms of the natural world that had not previously appeared in her work. Her peaches are created from networks of fine pencil lines ranging from the palest silvery grey to rich tones of yellow and pink. When examining them from different angles, noting the surface demarcations which contrast each other, the luscious peaches appear strangely disembodied and even erotic.

Masks: Beauty of the Spirit
June 18 - August 16, 2013
National Museum of China
Jointly hosted by the National Museum of China and Francebased Musée du quai Branly, this exhibition, consisting of about 100 masks, displays a rich variety of facial expressions shaped to embody the happiness and sorrow of human life.
The exhibition not only includes masks from theatrical performances, but also explains crucial roles masks have played in social and political life. Masks hid the faces of dispute mediators, police, and even judges who handed out rulings of life or death. Hailing from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania, most of the masks were associated with uncontrollable natural forces that needed to be tamed.
