第三部分 閱讀理解(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)
Welcome to the Amazon
The Amazon rainforest covers 2.5 million square miles. It is the largest remaining tropical(熱帶的)forest in the world. It gets more than nine feet of rain every year. The Amazon is in South America.
Almost two-thirds of the rainforest is in Brazil but it is also in parts of Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, French Guiana, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. The first Europeans to discover the Amazon were Spanish, who found it while searching for gold and silver to bring back to their king.
The first people they met in the rainforest were women warriors(戰(zhàn)士), so Francisco de Orella named the river after a Greek myth(神話)about women warriors called Amazons. Even though the Amazon makes up only two percent of the earths surface area, it is where more than half of the worlds plants and animal species are. The Amazon has 60,000 types of plants, 1,000 species of birds and 300 types of other animals.
Jaguars, piranhas and pink freshwater dolphins are just a few of the animals that live in the Amazon rainforest. Because the Amazon is so large and has so many plants, it helps the world breathe a little easier by changing carbon dioxide into oxygen. Kind Advice is Wise Advice
Once upon a time, the son of Brahmadatta was ruling righteously(正直地)in Benares, in northern India. Later the King of Kosala made a war, killed the King of Benares, and made the queen become his own wife.
Meanwhile, the queens son escaped by sneaking away through the sewers(下水道). In the countryside he eventually raised a large army. One day his army surrounded the city. He sent a message to the king, the murderer of his father and the husband of his mother. He told him to surrender the kingdom or fight a battle.
The princes mother, the Queen of Benares, heard of this threat from her son. She was a gentle and kind woman who wanted to prevent violence and suffering and killing. So she sent a message to her son — “There is no need for the risks of battle. It would be wiser to close every entrance to the city. Eventually the lack of food, water and firewood will wear down the citizens. Then they will give the city to you without any fighting.”
The prince decided to follow his mothers wise advice. His army blockaded the city for seven days and nights. Then the citizens caught their unlawful king, cut off his head, and gave it to the prince. He entered the city and became the new King of Benares.
