Two mayors made a bet on the outcome of the Vegetable Bowl, the annual football game between their high school teams. If Arvadas team lost, the mayor of Arvada would send the mayor of Boulder ten pounds of sliced potatoes, ready for frying. If Boulders team lost, the mayor would send ten pounds of sliced tomatoes, ready for sandwiches or salads.
Unfortunately, before the game started, the mayor of Boulder happened to hear the Arvada mayor tell someone, “They grow the worst tomatoes. If they lose and send us their tomatoes, Im going to give them all to my pig.” The mayor of Boulder was upset to hear this, because he thought Boulders tomatoes were the best in the state. So he gave the matter some thought.
The following week, the big game was played. Boulder lost its star quarterback (四分衛(wèi)) in the first half when he tripped (絆倒) over a cheerleader and hurt his big toe. The quarterback sadly watched the rest of the game from the chair. His team ended up losing, 38 to 12. The two mayors shook hands after the game, and the Arvada mayor said, “Im really looking forward to those tomatoes.” As the Boulder team left the stadium, some unhappy fans threw ripe tomatoes at them.
A week later, the mayor of Arvada received a package of beautifully sliced tomatoes. He took them straight to his pig, which ate them right up. That night the mayor of Boulder asked his wife if Arvadas mayor had called. “No,” she said, “Why?” “Because I mixed a pint (品脫) of hot sauce (醬) into the tomatoes and I wanted to know how his pigs doing.”

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺騙)? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.
For example, someone might say, I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!
This guys a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. Hes really a big loser!
He didnt say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. Thats called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians often use this trick. Lets say that during Governor Smiths last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (對手) says, “During Governor Smiths term, the state lost one million jobs!” Thats true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smiths term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. Its against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too often. Its a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

A. False statements are easy to see through. B. Half-truths are often used to mislead people.
C. Doctors like to act in advertisements. D. Advertisements are based on facts.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, Ive found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, its the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
Its fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just cant provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didnt want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate into a new ice age, may never occur, according to a new research.
The next ice age could be 15,000 years away, said European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740,000 years of climate data obtained from the Antarctic ice.
Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3,000-meter depth of ice in the Antarctic mainland. They figured out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to -40℃, has at least 9,000,000 years of snowfalls, kept as neat as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer (層) have begun to answer questions about the global climates in the past.
The results show that there have been 8 ice ages in the past 740,000 years and 8 warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with that of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15,000 years.
The research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels are the highest for at least 440,000 years.
“If people say to you: the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise, our data says no, and a new ice age is not hanging over our heads,” said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey. “Now we have 8 examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages, and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future.”
Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record, so did carbon dioxide level. “In 440,000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today,” said Dr Wolff.
18. In drilling through the ice in the Antarctica, scientists have found that ___ .
A. the lowest temperature there is -40℃ B. the depth of ice in the Antarctica is 2,000 meters
C. the ice has existed for 15,000 years D. snowfalls are kept in certain patterns
19. We can infer from Eric Wolffs words that ___ .
A. there is something wrong with the data B. greenhouse effect is always a bad thing
C. a new ice age will not come in the near future D. greenhouse gas will get thick in the future
20. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Research over the Antarctic Area B. Warm Period to Last about 15,000 Years
C. A Report on the Eight Ice Ages in the Past D. Hollywood Movies and the Global Climate

Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket—anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year, he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgways School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about Ridgways cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers, and adventures, then decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition (探險(xiǎn)) towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite (凍瘡), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled (雪橇) up and over rocky ice.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and hes skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.
Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2,900-kilometre journey that has never been completed on skis.

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 in a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.
After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing, Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918, he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke, which helped make it a great success. This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q (1921), made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.
Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about Chinas future. In 1926, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this, the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.

BEIJING—China has a growing middle class, a tradition of expecting education and 21 million new babies every year. Selling educational toys should be easy.
While China may be the worlds biggest toy maker, many of the best are exported. Department stores here do not have enough high-quality toys. It is said that the demand for educational toys is low.
A US company, BabyCare, is trying to change that with a new way to sell toys in China. BabyCare works basically together with doctors in Beijing hospitals. People who join the companys “mother club” can get lectures on baby and child development at no extra cost, if they agree to spend 18 dollars a month on the companys educational toys and childcare books.
“We want to build a seven-year relationship with those people,” said Matthew J. Estes, BabyCares president. “It starts during pregnancy, when anxiety and needs are highest.” BabyCare works on a one-to-one basis. Doctors, nurses and teachers paid by BabyCare advise parents, explaining that toys are designed for children at each stage of development to age six.
BabyCare opened its first store in China last June in a shopping center in central Beijing and another near Beijing Zoo. It plans to have 80 stores in China within six years.
It is a new model for China and develops a market in young childrens education and health which no other companies are in.

It is in the Alps, the mountain range that spreads about 1, 200 km across Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and other countries in Europe. These mountains offer lots of exciting sports, cultures and foods.
Sporting Life
The Alps are sports heaven. There are activities for everyone, from beginners and onlookers to championship-level competitors.
During summer, hiking in the Alps allows you to challenge yourself on endless roads. And you neednt climb the highest tops of mountains to enjoy the freedom found in the silence of the woods. You can also find romance on a walk under a full moon, or enjoy the pleasure of a picnic in a sunny field full of wild flowers. The Alps are homes to many great trails with fast downhill rides—perhaps in the worlds most exciting terrain (地形).
Skiing is something that you cant miss in the Alpine winter. Beginners can learn their skills with special lessons. The experts can experience complete freedom on wonderful slopes.
Its possible to ski or ride for days, from village to village or from country to country. The land is so vast that you will never take the same slope twice. Once you have skied in the Alps, you will never be satisfied with any other mountain.

Police in Taiwan cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or a cleverer cheat. Either way, it could be a perfect crime, because the criminals are birds—homing pigeons (鴿子)!
The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay up. Then the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a ting bag, the pigeon flies off.
There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind—one that avoids not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and waits for the car owner to place an ad in the newspaper asking for help.
The theory is supported by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded—under 3,000 Taiwan Dollars—seems too little for a car which is worth many times more.
Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do,” he said.
13. Who has “even lazier and inventive criminal mind”?
A. The car thief who stays at home. B. One of those who put the ads in the paper.
C. One of the policemen in Changwa. D. The owner of the pigeons.

A. he reads the ads in the newspaper B. he lives in the same neighborhood
C. he has seen the car owners in the park D. he has trained the pigeons to follow them

Burning the midnight oil before an exam or interview has an opposite effect according to a research which found that sleep is necessary for memories to be “downloaded” into the brain.
“A good nights sleep within 30 hours of trying to remember a new task is a necessary condition of having a good memory in the weeks ahead,” scientists have found.
“We think that getting that first nights sleep starts the process of memory consolidation (鞏固加強(qiáng)),” said Robert Stickgold, a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School who conducted the latest study.
“It seems that memories are normally washed out of the brain unless some process nails them down. I feel uncertain that sleep is one of those things that do the nailing down,” Professor Stickgold said.
Professor Stickgolds team trained 24 people to tell the direction of three diagonal bars (斜線) shown for a sixtieth of a second on a computer screen full of horizontal stripes (水平線條).
Half the subjects were kept awake that night, while the others slept. Both groups were allowed to sleep for the second and third nights to make up for any differences in tiredness between the two groups of the volunteers.
Those who slept the first night were much better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement in spite of enjoying two nights of catch-up sleep.
A further study by scientists at the Medical University at Lubeck in Germany showed that memories are laid down in two stages during the night. The first is during the deep, so-called “slow wave” sleep, which usually takes place in the first half of the night. The second, and less important stage happens during the period of dreaming or “rapid eye movement (REM)”. When people dont sleep well in the first half of the night, their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.
16. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 1?
A. Sleep speeds up the loss of memories.
B. Burn the midnight oil is necessary before an exam.
C. A good sleep helps to keep a good memory.
D. Staying up late will make you better prepared for an exam.
17. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ___ .
A. Professor Stickgold doubted about whether sleep can make memories better
B. some process helps memories to be washed out of the brain
C. some memories normally influence the function of the brain
D. sleep improves the condition of memories
18. How did Professor Stickgold conduct the research?
A. The subjects were divided into two groups.
B. All the subjects were kept awake for three nights.
C. One group slept at the first night but was kept awake the next two nights.
D. One group was kept awake for three nights but the other slept for the next two nights.
19. What does the study suggest?
A. REM sleep is not important at all for the consolidation for memories.
B. Memory consolidation mainly depends on the slow wave sleep period.
C. Poor sleep in the first half of the night means having no sleep at all.
D. REM sleep is as important as slow wave sleep in terms of the memory.
20. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A. Sleep is Necessary for Memories B. The Importance of the First Stage of Sleep
C. Studies Made by Scientists about Sleep D. The Scientists Achievement in Sleep Research

Medical research is leading American education officials to consider having high school classes start later in the morning. The research says that teenagers are more awake later at night than adults are. When staying up late at night, the teenagers have problems learning early in the morning.
Researchers in the state of Rhode Island measured the amount of the hormone (荷爾蒙) melatonin (降黑素) in peoples mouths at different times of the day. Melatonin causes people to feel sleepy.
They found that melatonin levels rise later at night in teenagers than they do in children and adults. It remains at higher levels in teenagers later in the morning. They said this shows that teenagers have difficulty learning early in the morning. Yet most school systems in the United States begin high school classes at about seven oclock.
A few school districts have made some changes. In 1996, school officials in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start of classes from seven thirty to eight thirty. Two years later, the nearby city of Minneapolis did the same. Teachers there reported that students were no longer sleepy in class and were happier.
Health experts say that teenagers need between eight and nine hours of sleep a night. Students not getting enough sleep are likely to be late for school, fail to do their homework, fall asleep in class and have trouble taking part in class discussions.
Some people, however, dont support a later start time because they say that it would limit the time for practicing sports after school. However, the Minnesota schools found that this did not hurt school sports competitions.
More American school districts are discussing the possibility of changing high school start times. Researchers and teenagers say that they cannot make the change quickly enough.

There was a wonderful story about Jimmy Durante, one of the greatest entertainers of a few generations ago. He was asked to be a part of a show for some World WarⅡveterans. He told them his schedule was very tight and he could only afford to pay a few minutes. However, if they wouldnt mind him doing a short monologue (獨(dú)白,單口相聲) and leaving immediately for his next appointment, he would come. Of course, the shows director agreed happily.
But when Jimmy got on stage, something interesting happened. He went through the monologue and then stayed. The applause grew louder and louder and he continued to stay. Pretty soon he had been on fifteen, twenty, then thirty minutes. Finally he took a last bow and left the stage. Backstage someone stopped him and said, “I thought you had to go after a few minutes. What happened?” Jimmy answered, “I did have to go, but I can show you the reason why I stayed. You can see for yourself if you look at the front row.”
In the front row were two men, each of whom had lost an arm in the war. One had lost his right arm and the other had lost his left arm. Together they were able to clap, and thats exactly what they were doing, loudly and cheerfully.

Do you find that getting up in the morning so difficultly is painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that youre “hot”. Thats true. The time of a day when you feel energy at the top is when your cycle of body temperature is at its top. For some people the top comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to familiar sayings, such as: “Get up, John! Youll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy top in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You cant change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr Kleitman believes. Maybe youre sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some degree by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, get up before you usually do. This wont change your cycle, but youll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a comfortable yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Start without the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do simple work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

There are many ways of defining success. In other words, each of us has our own opinion on success that each of us can set our own goals and determine whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us has differences in born abilities and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must judge success broadly.
For some people, simply being able to live their lives with the least degree of misery (悲慘) and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd (牧羊人) who looks after his sheep. He enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature. And he is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by him and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success. Because not all goals can be achieved, one should not set unpractical goals for achieving success. But if one believes his ability, it would be unfortunate to set ones goals at too low a level of achievement.
A wise advisor once said to a young man who was experiencing bottleneck in his life, “You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful just by taking a walk in a park or taking a train downtown.” The advisor added, “You have not really failed and ruined your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful in something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort.”
9. What can influence success according to Paragraph 1?
A. Goals and abilities. B. Determination and abilities.
C. Abilities and environments. D. Goals and environments.
10. What can be concluded from the story of the shepherd and the rich?
A. You need to set your goal low to succeed.
B. Money always makes people unhappy.
C. Everybody can be successful in life.
D. Setting practical goal is necessary for success.
11. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the last paragraph?
A. Taking a walk in a park is successful.
B. Young people should not set their goals high.
C. If you try your best to do what you like, you wont fail.
D. If you fail in something you like and do your best to do, you actually lose.
12. This passage mainly talks about ___ .
A. what success is B. how to achieve success
C. how to set goals D. the importance of success

“Sam” the koala, the most famous survivor of Australias worst-ever wildfires, is healing well thanks to the efforts of caretakers at a rescue shelter and she even has a new boyfriend, “Bob”.
Sam, who caught the eyes of the world after she was photographed drinking from a firefighters water bottle, has won the affection of “Bob”, another koala whose paws were scorched, caretaker Lynn Raymond said Thursday.
Neither koala is likely to be healthy enough for release for at least four months, and both are being treated by caretakers for their scorched paws every few hours.
Global interest in the fate of Sam has been intense since a photograph of firefighter David Tree offering her a bottle of water in a burned-out forest was splashed across the Internet, in newspapers and on television broadcasts. The telephone at the shelter has rung continually with callers eager for update on the creatures condition.
“Its crazy,” Raymond said with a laugh. “But everybody has been absolutely wonderful.”
Sam was found moving on scorched paws by a fire patrol on Sunday. Tree then held out a bottle of water for her to drink, which she eagerly accepted, holding Trees hand as he poured water into her mouth.
After suffering second-and-third-degree burns to her paws, Sam has been sharing a cage with Bob, who took an immediate interest in her when she arrived on Sunday.

In recent years, lots of people have been drinking and driving, causing a number of deaths because of drunk driving to increase sharply. They show a total disregard for the law, and they dont care about it. Thankfully, there are people on the road who do, like Larry Johnson, who was recently recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Barrie/ Simcoe for following a drunk driver and reporting to the police.
Johnson was just driving out last October when he noticed someone in a car driving erratically. “It was 1:30 pm and I was heading into the town to get some dog food,” said Johnson. “This car came flying by the stop sign like a rocket. I thought if it was a teen, this is bad. So I called 911.” Following the car in his green pickup truck, Johnson watched as it drove up to County Road 90 and pulled into a ditch when it turned right. Then heading towards Barrie, the car kept driving in the grass for another 30 meters before it righted itself back onto the road. “I slowed down behind it to keep a safe distance,” said Johnson.
At Ferndale Drive, the car sped past the traffic light pole at the crossing, and kept heading along Dunlop Street towards Highway 400 north. At this point, Johnson had been following the car for about 20 minutes, and wondered where the police were. Finally, he heard the sirens (警笛) and saw an unmarked truck coming towards him on the highway.
“The truck forced the car to park by the roadside and I pulled up behind the car. The officer spoke with the driver, and then walked to me. He was a plain-clothes (便衣) police officer and told me that I had saved a little kids life. There was a three-year-old kid in the back seat,” said Johnson.
This spring, Johnson was given the MADD Community Hero award for going so far to save lives. “If I didnt follow the driver and something unfortunate happened, I would have wondered how I could live with myself. Ive learned how to do first aid and I thought if the car did turn over, at least Id be able to help.”

In the past ten years, Americas National Basketball Association (NBA) has become increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players.
When Larry Bird and Michael Jordan won gold in Barcelona last century, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters (花名冊) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stem happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stem outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to see more European countries hosting NBA games by 2015.
The NBA is now intending to make China its market center. “Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stem. The strategy in China is television. “Weve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing in China. The NBA puts that to the test in October 2013 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Aacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil.
“It makes no difference where the players come from, and what really matters is that all the NBA teams know they have to scout (物色球員) internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBAs vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers. Others, such as the Houston Rockets Chinese centre Yao Ming—number one player pick in 2002—and the Detroit Pistons18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two in this years players—are icons in-waiting. It is the ultimate revolution—the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.

Ceremonial bathing has existed for thousands of years and has many forms, one of which is the sauna. The Finns have perfected the steam bath, or sauna, which may be taken, usually in an enclosed room, by pouring water over hot rocks or as dry heat bath. The Japanese, Greeks, Turks and Russians as well as Native Americans have forms of the sweat bath in their bathing rituals (儀式). Dry heat and steam baths had advocates in ancient Rome and pre-Columbian Americans used sweat house.
The earliest saunas were probably underground caves heated by a fire that naturally filled with smoke as chimney making was unknown at that time. A fire kept in a fire-pit would heat the rock walls of the cave. After reaching full heat, the smoke was let out of the cave and the stones would preserve heat for several hours. A few people today say that the smoke sauna, “svusauna”, is the only true sauna experience and that all saunas should have at least a background odor (氣味) or smoke. Today most saunas use electric stoves, although gas and wood-burning stoves are available.
Saunas are relaxing and stress relieving. Those with muscle aches or arthritis (關(guān)節(jié)炎) may find that the heat relaxes muscles and relieves pain. Saunas do not cure the common cold but they may help to ease congestion and speed recovery time. The bodys core temperature usually rises 1-2 degrees while in the sauna. The regular use of a sauna may decrease the likelihood of getting a cold in the first place.
Sauna is good for your skin as the blood flow to the skin increases and sweating occurs. Adults sweat about 2 lbs of water per hour on average in a sauna. A good sweat removes dirt from pores (毛孔) and gives the skin a healthy glow. The loss in water weight is temporary as the bodys physiological mechanisms will quickly restore proper volumes. The cardiovascular system (心血管系統(tǒng)) gets work out as the heart must beat harder and faster to move blood to the surface for heat exchange. Heart rate may increase from 72 beats per minute on average to 100-150 beats per minute.

When I opened my e-mail the other day, a pretty woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking warmly. Every now and then she stopped to smile at me. She was reading to me an e-mail from my brother. It was very cool and lovely.
That Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail. Facemail lets you send an e-mail that gets ready to the receiver on line by an attractive man or woman or by a clown. The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www.facemail.com. Facemail faces are lifelike, and they simulate emotions (模仿情感) based on emotions that you put in your text.
The company that develops the Facemail is sure it will be broadly used in many fields. The reason why e-business is not popular, the company says, is that buying over the Internet lacks the human touch. But what if you went to the Nike website and Michael Jordan greeted you by name, waited on you and personally dealt with the sale? And the company is talking with Whirpool Company about using the technology in a computer screen on a fridge. Then if mom cant be home when the kids get back from school, she can leave a note with voice and image telling them what there is to eat.
Facemail could get hot fast. Personally, Im a fan. Facemail is lively and funny at first, but if you select the clown, put a few rude words in an e-mail and add some angry emotions, youve got a crazy mail.
13. The main advantage of Facemail is that you can ___ .
A. get the e-mail in a more lovely way

More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves and set a tone (基調(diào)) for the year. “The letter is a good way to start active communication with parents,” several teachers told Education World.
“I think its my job,” said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta High School in Sparta, New Jersey. Peselli, who gave out the letters on the first day of school, told Education World, “It gives parents a good image of you as a teacher. If you start communication off in an active manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them.”
In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or send e-mails to her with special concerns about their children. “I want to work as a team to make sure that your children become independent lifelong learners,” Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephoned the parents of all her students at the beginning of the year.
Peselli includes in the letter a classroom handbook listing plans and rules. And she asks both parents and students to read and sign statements (included in the letter) that they read the handbook. The student letter also lists needed supplies and gives encouragement. “Please come to class ready to work and learn. This will be an exciting year for all of us,” says it.
Last year, Peselli taught at a different high school and parents there were “shocked”, but thankful, that she had so much contact with them. “I received roses and a thank-you note from one boy and his mother,” said Peselli. She wishes her own childrens teachers would take the time to write notes as well. “I never got a letter home from any of my daughters high school teachers,” she said. “It would be nice to know the background of some of the people who are teaching my daughter.”
17. We may learn from the text that ___ .

C. Peselli believes it is important for teachers to communicate with parents
D. Peselli mainly introduces her background and teaching experiences in the letters

C. Peselli seems to be popular among boy students
D. all Pesellis children are studying at high schools

Every country has many good people who help to take care of others. Some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in a hospital, orphanage (孤兒院) or home for the aged.
They read books to the people who must be in these places or they just visit them and play games or listen to their problems. Other young people volunteer to collect food or money, or they work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their lawns. There is a group of volunteers to meet almost every need. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to know about things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Every city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go play games or to learn crafts. Some of these clubs have movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use many high school and college students as volunteers because they still remember the problems of younger boys and girls.
Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.
