假期來臨時，人們都喜歡利用難得的空閑時間舉辦或參加一些既有趣又能增進友誼的社交聚會，這就是party。這期我們就來講一講由party這個詞發(fā)展而來的習慣用語。

慣用語一：life of the party

大家都知道life的意思是生命，但它也可以解釋為活力或精華。life of the party則是指在聚會中活躍氣氛的核心人物。

例 People who give parties always invite Jenny because they know shell be the life of the party. She knows everybody in town， helps guests get to know each other， makes sure they get plenty to eat and makes everybody feel very comfortable.

人們舉辦派對時總會邀請珍妮，因為他們知道她是活躍氣氛的核心人物。她認識鎮(zhèn)上的每一個人，所以在聚會上能為客人們相互引見介紹，而且她還會確保大伙有足夠的食物，讓每個人都感到舒暢。

慣用語二：party pooper

pooper來自poop。poop這個詞有一種解釋是筋疲力盡，當我們說poop out時，意思就是累得喘不過氣了。那么party pooper是聚會上的什么人物呢？我們通過一個例子來看看吧。

例 Honey， lets not invite Joe. Hes a real party pooper，He puts on this sour look like his stomach hurts， has nothing to say to anybody， doesnt even smile at other peoples jokes and always looks like hed rather be any place else.

親愛的，我們不要請喬了。他只會掃興，他老是愁眉苦臉的，看上去像在胃疼，而且他不茍言笑，跟旁人無話可談，聽了別人說的笑話甚至連笑都不笑，他總是看起來像是寧可不來赴會的樣子。

根據以上對喬的這番描述，我們發(fā)現(xiàn)喬在聚會上是個孤僻冷漠、興味索然而又令人掃興的人，這也就是party pooper的意思了。endprint
