Relax. He is the same little boy you loved yesterday. I smiled, trying to hold back the tears. “No he isnt. Yesterday I dreamed he would be an astronaut. Today I am hoping he will learn to talk.”

It was like some sort of cosmic joke. I could still recall the day that determined my fate. My casually mentioning Wyatts behavior to Dr. Martin aroused his worries. He started asking me questions about Wyatts activities, speech pattern and emotions. I still remember how desperate and shocking I felt when he said, “He almost sounds autistic(自閉癥的).”

I started to hide Wyatt from my friends and neighbor especially from a good friend. For eight months a friend and I had been pregnant together. Our boys were six days apart. We used to have long phone talks about our babies to share some fun and loss. It was too painful to let others know about my boy acting strange.

It was a Thursday afternoon and I found one half of a great pair of kitchen scissors was missing. I knew Wyatt had taken the missing blade.

“Wyatt,” I began as patiently as I could, “Do you see this” I held up the blade. “Do you know what this is?”

Wyatt stuffed a bunch of Fruit Loops in his mouth. No response.

I didnt know what to do. It was really hard. “Wyatt,” I tried once more, “Mommy wants these scissors. It will make Mommy so happy if you bring me the scissors.”

He just ran away, but five minutes later, he returned, with a blade in the right hand! I immediately ran over and took it from him.

endprint

“Wyatt!” I hugged him. “Thank you for bringing me the scissors! Good job! You did it!”

Wyatt laughed, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Mommy so happy!”

I was on the verge of tears. Why did I hide him from others as if he were some dark and terrible secret No! He was my pride. It was a long, hard battle to get him to this point, expressing his wants and needs. In fact, each new day brings out a new set of challenges and we have learned a lot about fighting this thing called autism. With love and patience I have found the beautiful, happy boy who would teach me more about life.

He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still and home.” He looked at us and said,“I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled the ocean.”

Franks voice dropped a bit.“When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me good-bye!”

I said,‘Dad, Im too old for a good-bye kiss. Im too old for any kind of kiss. My Dad looked at me for the longest tine, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked at the windshield.‘Youre right,he said. ‘You are a big boy... a man. I wont kiss you anymore.”

For the moment, Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes.“It wasnt long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back.”

I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again.“Guys, you dont know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek... to feel his rough old face... to smell the ocean on him... to feel his arm around my neck. At 6 AM, most of us are lucky if we have the energy to reach for a cup of coffee. Mornings may be rough, but hold off on sleeping in. There are perks to waking up with the sun, and weve got some tips on making it easier.

The old “Im just too tired” complaint may be more than a sorry excuse for waking up late. Research suggests there are biological differences between early larks, who wake up at the same time every morning and feel most active around 9 AM, and night owls, who get more stuff done once the sun goes down. And it may get easier to greet the day at dawn as we get older, thanks to body clock changes as we age.

endprint

It turns out the early bird may get more than the worm. According to self-reports from college students, those who wake up earlier feel more optimistic and productive than those who rise later. Other studies have found morning larks tend to be harder working and conscientious than night owls.

Another study of university undergraduates found those who said they function better in the morning received higher grades than those who preferred the evening Thats possibly because morning risers are more likely to get to class on time or to forgo late-night partying. Researchers also suggest memory may improve during sleep, so getting to bed earlier in preparation for a morning alarm could help those exam notes soak in.

Being a morning person may actually be good for our health, too. When UK researchers questioned adults about their sleep habits, they found people who stay under the covers on the weekdays until 9 AM are more likely to be stressed, overweight, and depressed than those who get up at 7 AM. Another study found teenagers who went to bed and woke up late were less inclined to hit the gym and more likely to be overweight than those who went to bed and woke up early. Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

36. According to the passage, the “Im just too tired” complaint was __________.

A. many teenagers reason for getting up late

B. an excuse to avoid waking up early

C. a good reason of staying in bed

D. evidence that teenagers are under great pressure

37. What did the underlined sentence mean in Para. 4?

A. People who get up early benefit a lot.

B. Only early birds can hunt worms.

C. People who get up early get make a better living.

D. We should get up as early as birds.

38. Which of the following is not the advantage of getting up early?

A. a more positive life attitude

B. a more diligent working attitude

C. a more healthy lifestyle

D. a better eating habit

39. The students who get up early tend to receive higher grades for the following reasons except that _______________.

A. sleep helps them improve their memory

B. they are punctual for the classes

C. they can resist the distraction of late-night entertainment

D. they are more intelligent in studying

40. Which section of newspaper does the passage come from?

A. FashionB. Health

C. ScienceD. Entertainment

“I still dont know what I want to be when I grow up.” My friends father used to say that all the time. He was in his mid-40s.

A lot of people live their lives having no clue what they want. They usually follow the American Dream without a second thought, just because thats whats expected of them.

If you ask me, thats a pretty terrible way to live your life. At the risk of sounding cheesy, Id like to point out that you have only one life; make the most out of it and do things that make you happy. And you should start right now!

If you dont know what you really want in life, youre not alone. Thousands, if not millions, of people wander the earth every day without a quest. If you dont want to spend your life wandering aimlessly, you can use the following tips to find out exactly what you want in life.

endprint

First, be selfish. You cant pinpoint exactly what you want in life if youre constantly sacrificing your time and dreams for other people. You have to put yourself first. Ask yourself: If you werent tied down by your job, family, friends, or anything else, then what would you be doing right now? Always remember that its okay to put yourself first, because if you dont, then no one else will.

Second, dont feel bad for being selfish. Its your life. Its time for you to live it exactly the way you want to. If you constantly regret things you did or didnt do in the past, then you wont be able to move forward. Dont live in the past. Live in the present...and the future!

Figure out what you need is another way. Sometimes its hard to figure out what you need. Sit down and think about what you need the most. Is it your family? The freedom to express yourself? Love? Something else? If it helps, you can make a list of priorities. Also think about the kind of legacy you want to leave behind.

Remember, life doesnt always go how you want it. Dont feel disappointed as your plans stray. Take control. Instead of breaking down, try your best to adapt to the changes. You will get there someday. Youre just taking a little detour. Sometimes a positive attitude is all you need to keep going.

41. The author used his friends fathers example to show that ___________.

A. it is difficult for a middle-aged man to realize his dream

B. many people dont know how to realize their dream

C. few people know what they can expect of the American Dream

D. many people have no idea of what they want to be

42. The underlined word “pinpoint” probably means __________.

A. figure out B. give up C. try to attainD. dream about

43. According to the passage, the author may probably agree that _______.

A. we should never consider others

B. we should put our family first

C. we should be responsible for ourselves

D. we should never feel regret for anything

44. If things do go as we have expected, we should _______.

A. change this situation B. stay positive

C. ask others for helpD. give up immediately

45. What is the purpose of this passage?

A. To describe how difficult to achieve our dreams.

B. To give us advice on find out what we need.

C. To tell us how to fit into the changeable society.

D. To illustrate that it is ok to be selfish.

A. While it may feel like your world is crashing around you, this rough time does not, ultimately, define your life. From family to being healthy, its best to recognize the positive things in your life. It definitely helps ease the pain of a negative situation.

B. According to a quote from Steven Furtick,“The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyones highlight reel.” When youre struggling through a tough situation, comparing yourself is the last thing you should be doing. You have no idea what struggles another person could be going through, so instead of comparing, you should look at the happiness within yourself.

endprint

C. Although it may seem challenging to accept a negative situation, its your best bet in moving toward a resolution. You cant change what already happened; you can only focus on how to improve the circumstances now.

D. Now that all is said and done, its time to start looking ahead to the future. Leave the past behind you, and begin looking to a brighter tomorrow. Change begins and ends with you, and clinging to a past event wont help alter it. Work on building a better future for yourself; it all starts with a positive mindset.

E. The best way to overcome a negative time is to be determined to find a way out of it. If you dont like the way something is, do what you can in your power to change it. In financial situations, you can work on a budget and prioritize your costs. In a fight with a loved one, you can take some time to cool down and amend things by talking it out.

F. Having a support system is essential for any tough moment. Family members, significant others, and best friends are the people you should confide in when going through a distressing time. These people are the ones who know you best and can give you advice from an outside perspective. Besides, it doesnt hurt having someone you love and care for in your corner rooting you on.

46. As a senior three student, Denny is sad to find that he has wasted too much time playing computer games. Now he is putting all his efforts in studying, hoping to be admitted to his dream university, but he finds it a great challenge to catch up with his classmates.

47. Aurora, a girl from a remote village, feels herself inferior after she entered university. She was jealous of her dorm mates fashionable clothes, a wide range of knowledge and fluent English.

48. James is an optimistic and outgoing boy, but last week he had quarrels with his best friend, so now they were stuck in a cold war. James is annoyed and regretful.

49. Hard as he has tried, Kevin fails the college entrance examination. Disappointed and upset, it seems to him that the world is at an end.

50. As for Bertha, she is facing the biggest challenge now. With the college entrance examination to come next month, she is nervous and confused, not having the slightest idea of how to make the best use of her time.

Friendship with oneself is all important, because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world.

We often focus on building relationships with others that we forget the essential first step: being friends of ourselves. That is the crucial first step if we are to have good relationships with others. How can we have good relationships with others if we dont even have good relationship with ourselves?

endprint

Here are some tips:

1. Forgive yourself

You may have made those mistakes in the past, but is there anything you can do about them? I dont think so, except learning from them. Its true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. Its normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness.

2. Focus on your strengths

Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have some strengths which give you a unique combination nobody else have. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them.

3. Stop comparing yourself with others

You are unique. You can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so its useless to compare yourself with others.

He was a big man, and he was strong from…

My Dad looked at me for the longest tine, and his eyes started to tear up可知答案。

It wasnt long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back可知。

通過第二段的more than a sorry excuse for waking up late可知,這個不僅僅是借口,而且還會帶來損失。

根據(jù)下文所說的those who wake up earlier feel more optimistic and productive, morning larks tend to be harder working and conscientious than night owls可知這里所指的是早起的好處多。

根據(jù)第三段的those who wake up earlier feel more optimistic and productive可排除A, 第四段的to forgo late-night partying可排除C,第三段的tend to be harder working可排除B

根據(jù)第四段的morning risers are more likely to get to class on time or to forgo late-night partying. 可排除B和C,根據(jù)Researchers also suggest memory may improve during sleep可排除A

A lot of people live their lives having no clue what they want。

Ask yourself:If you werent...,then what would you be doing right now?

Its time for you to live it exactly the way you want to.

根據(jù)最后一段的try your best to adapt to the changes和Sometimes a positive attitude is all you need to keep going.

If you dont want to spend your life wandering aimlessly, you can use the following tips to find out exactly what you want in life.

46. C 根據(jù)Denny is sad to find that he has wasted too much time playing computer games可知Denny是后悔自己以前不用功,與C答案的accept a negative situation和ou cant change what already happened對應(yīng)。

47. B 根據(jù)feels herself inferior和She was jealous of her dorm mates...可知,這與B答案的comparing yourself is the last thing you should be doing相對應(yīng)。

48. E 根據(jù)he had quarrels with his best friend可知,這與E答案的In a fight with a loved one, you can take some time to cool down and amend things by talking it out對應(yīng)。

49. A 根據(jù)Kevin fails the college entrance examination以及it seems to him that the world is at an end可知, 這與A答案的While it may feel like your world is crashing around you, this rough time does not, ultimately, define your life對應(yīng)。

50. F 根據(jù)he is facing the biggest challenge now可知,這與Family members, significant others, and best friends are the people you should confide in when going through a distressing time對應(yīng)。

Last weekend, I had an interview with Professor Yang, a psychologist, concerning the issue of classmate conflicts among senior middle school students in China. According to Professor Yang, approximately 45% of senior middle school students in our country have once conflicted with other classmates, bringing them much annoyance or resulting in serious physical violence. He also pointed out that classmate conflicts, more often than not, arise from small annoying differences. When it comes to how to settle the conflicts, Professor Yang suggested that school children learn to be tolerant with each other. Meanwhile, he mentioned that communication contributes to the solution to this problem since many of these conflicts result from misunderstanding and students are supposed to seek help from educators or parents if necessary.

Dear Li Ping,

Im glad that you trust me so much and tell me your true feeling, now Ive read an article which says that it is important to be friendly to yourself first and then to others, and gives a few tips, such as forgiving yourself, realizing your virtues and not comparing with others.

As is known to all, no one is perfect, and everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so if you fall behind others in some aspect, its natural and theres nothing so serious as for you to feel frustrated. I know youreworried about your study because youve not got as good results as some of your classmates in the exams, but thats not the most important, so long as you try your best, Im sure youll make progress.

Besides, You have your own virtues which some others dont have, for example, you play basketball better than many other students in our school, and you also play the guitar well. How we envy you!

So never feel discouraged if you fall behind others in your study, and never forget you are good at many other aspects.

With the best wishes!

Yours truly,

Wang Yan
