Football has become a vital instrument for hundreds of social development programmes run by private and communitybased organisation around the world. These programmes are providing children and young people with valuable tools that make a difference to their lives, while contributing to positive social development on a global scale by addressing the most pressing issues in each community.

To contribute to building a better future in the Host Cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup BrazilTM, FIFA and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee (LOC) will promote the use of football as a tool for social development through FIFAs well established global Football for Hope initiative.

The highlight of 2014 is the Football for Hope Festival 2014, which will take place from July 2 to July10 in Caju, Rio de Janeiro. The Festival brings together 32 delegations of young representatives from Football for Hopesupported organisations. The projects they help to run are tackling a variety of social issues, from homelessness in the UK and landmines in Laos, to HIV/AIDS education in South Africa and responsible citizenship in Brazil. During the festival, they will have the opportunity to exchange best practices, play football and enjoy the FIFA World Cup together.

The festivals programme will include an array of cultural and educational activities for the delegations, culminating in a football tournament, where mixed teams will compete without referees. Any disagreements on the pitch will be resolved through dialogue, a method proven to encourage personal development and mutual understanding.

Stretching for a good few minutes in the morning before you get up is pleasant, relaxing and toning— and of course, it helps you to wake up.

It does not matter what position you are in, though of course it helps to have some room to move. Stretch when you finish a piece of work or before you start. Or stop work for a stretching break. The possibilities are endless.

Shaking is another pleasurable stressreducing exercise. You may remember being taught this in junior school. All you need to do is to take a few minutes out and shake different body parts until the tension just drops away. Work on different muscle groups, isolated or together e.g. shoulders, arms, hands, fingers. Dont stop until you feel refreshed and relaxed. Of course you can combine this with a good stretch before or after.

Spinning is another valuable exercise which can make you feel energised and yet relaxed. This is a technique favoured by Tibetan monks and the Sufis.

Just stand with arms outstretched and turn on the spot. You can go quite slowly at first. Start with three or four spins once or twice a day and build up gradually. Kids do this for fun. Research has shown it can have considerable health benefits.

It does not much matter whether you watch TV or listen to music. Just take some time to really rest. It is important to spend some of the day engaged in more restful pursuits so that a relaxed state of mind can be achieved. Avoid challenging and stimulating activities and exercise in the time leading up to sleep.

These techniques are all good— but they are useless if you dont actually do them! You may need to set aside time each day for stressreducing activities.

If you make some or all of them a part of your lifestyle you will find you become more relaxed and able to cope with stresses.

Ms.Abdikadir, one of the 500 young African leaders who are taking part in a US government program at American universities this summer studying Civic Leadership, Public Management and Business, comes from a family of travelling animal herders in Garissa. Garissa has failed to develop as fast as the rest of the country. She hopes the Northern Organization can change that.

“We are being taught how to transform the societies with what we have. They say what we have is the energy, the zeal, the enthusiasm and the brains of coming up with new ideas in order to save the society from poverty, illiteracy, genderbased violence and so many social vices,”she said.

The people of northeastern Kenya have depended for centuries on their animals. Families move from one place to another in search of water and places to feed the animals. This traditional life — always on the move limits education and health care. Most people walk more than 10 kilometers to reach schools, or a health center.

Ms.Abdikadir said she wants to make agriculture another way of life in her community. She believes settling permanently and planting crops would provide a better future for young people.

“Specifically, where I come from we are not so much into agriculture yet we have very fertile land, we have very good opportunities to practice agriculture. The other thing is the youth empowerment, we need to empower the youth.”

Ms.Abdikadir said there are two kinds of young people — those from rural areas and those from cities. She said only the city people can make use of what limited resources that exist.

Ms.Abdikadir said she and the other young people receive six weeks of training, they will also work for two months in the civil leadership field. The program seeks to guide Africas educators, business people and activists of the future.

The Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is part of President Obamas Young African Leaders Initiative. Those attending are between ages 25 and 35. They will receive money to support their plans and organizations after they complete the program.endprint

Many students say there is no easy way to write college papers. This may be especially true if English is not your first language. Most teachers agree 36. But there are methods to help you structure your papers.

One way often used to structure writing is the traditional fiveparagraph essay. The paragraphs follow conventions or established rules.

The first paragraph is introductory. It tells the reader what the paper is about. It is followed by three paragraphs containing evidence that support the writers argument. The final paragraph is the conclusion. It provides a reasoned opinion based on the evidence.

Allison Cummings teaches English at Southern New Hampshire University. She is among many professors who find this form too simple for college work. Still, on the positive side, Ms. Cummings says37.

She says the form teaches the need for the opening statement or thesis. This thesis tells the reader what will come next. In addition students who have learned to write a fiveparagraph essay know they must provide evidence. And Ms. Cummings says 38.

But she also says the fiveparagraph essay falls far short of college writing needs.

“Most of the subjects 39 are going to involve more paragraphs, and more points and more complexities.”

So if a traditional method for structuring a research paper does not work, what steps can help you structure your writing. Ms. Cummings students learn several ways to organize their papers. The pace at which they learn differs.

Ms. Cummings says40. The teacher says noting the way the research is structured can help students organize their own writing.endprint

Ms. Cummings also provides her students with examples of successful and unsuccessful student papers. That way her class can see what works in a piece of writing and what does not.

A. doing research for a paper helps some students in their writing

B. the writer will know a conclusion is required

C. writing a research paper is necessary

D. that students are asked to write about

E. that there is no single correct way to create a personal essay or research paper

F. it is quite easy to write a research paper quickly

G. the fiveparagraph essay form teaches a student some tools for writing a paper

Dear Mum & Dad,endprint

How are you? Have been away from home for several month, I miss you very much. Now Im write to tell you something about my study here.

I arrived in China on August 26. As the school started on September 6, so I travelled to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou before I came to school. Now I had studied here for two months.

Dislike schools in America, the class here is very large and we have more subjects as well. In our class, there is more than sixty students, which is the average size. Everyday we have eight periods, so we are very busy.

As the teachers teach with Chinese, I found it a great challenge at first. Luckily, the students and teachers are very helpful and friendly. With their help, I have made great progresses.

Though I am getting along well with my study,I miss you so much. I am looking forward to your coming to see me.

Best wishes.

Yours daughter,

Mary
