On July 2nd, some 4,000 years old fabric fragments unearthed from the Shimao Ruins, Shenmu County, Shaanxi Province were exposed to the public, which means our ancients who lived in Northern China had leaned the technique of textile weaving thousand years ago.
According to the initial identification, archaeologists identified ramie fiber as the raw material of these fabric fragments, which indicates that Shimao people had already been aware of growing ramie on the purpose of textile weaving 4,000 years ago. This discovery has a historical significance of exploring Chinese clothing, and further confirms the assumption of “Northern linen while Southern silk” in Chinese textile history.
