(How will I know him)。
第二段,兒子慢慢長(zhǎng)大,Clapton那種為人父的幸福與滿足活靈活現(xiàn)地體現(xiàn)在“As I watch this seedling grow, feel my heart start to overflow”這句歌詞里。隨著兒子漸漸長(zhǎng)大,Clapton也從初為人父的局促轉(zhuǎn)向更為深入的責(zé)任感,比如他在歌詞中寫道:“How do I teach him? What do we play?”
然而非常不幸的是,Clapton的兒子在四歲半時(shí)失足跌落陽臺(tái),小天使未長(zhǎng)大成人就離開了人世,這也正是歌詞“Then the jagged edge appears, through the distant clouds of tears”委婉表達(dá)之意。 Clapton用“Im like a bridge that was washed away”“My foundations were made of clay”和“As my soul slides down to die”三句歌詞表達(dá)了當(dāng)時(shí)的沉痛與絕望,其中第三句又與第一段的“Pray for healing rain to restore my soul”形成強(qiáng)烈對(duì)比。
但是,我們從歌曲中不難看出,所謂的look into my fathers eyes,事實(shí)上是look into my sons eyes。Clapton后來也解釋說:“In it I tried to describe the parallel between looking in the eyes of my son, and the eyes of the father that I never met, through the chain of our blood.”
Sailing down behind the sun
Waiting for my prince to come
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again
Just a toe rag1) on the run
How did I get here?
What have I done?
When will all my hopes arise?
How will I know him?
When I look in my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
When I look in my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
Then the light begins to shine
And I hear those ancient lullabies2)
And as I watch this seedling3) grow
Feel my heart start to overflow4)
Where do I find the words to say?
How do I teach him?
What do we play?
Bit by bit, Ive realized
Thats when I need them
Thats when I need my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
Thats when I need my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
Then the jagged5) edge appears
Through the distant clouds of tears
Im like a bridge that was washed away
My foundations were made of clay
As my soul slides down to die
How could I lose him?
What did I try?
Bit by bit, Ive realized
That he was here with me
I looked into my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
I looked into my fathers eyes
(Look into my fathers eyes)
My fathers eyes
