It is reported that the Ebola (埃博拉) virus has returned to Africa. The virus causes a disease called Ebola hemorrhagic (出血的) fever. The Ebola virus affects animals and people. It killed more than 200 people in the former Zaire in 1995. This year, the Ebola virus has killed more than 150 people in Uganda.

The Ebola virus kills so quickly that the bodys defense system has no time to act against it. The disease kills fifty to ninety percent of the people it infects. The disease begins with high body temperature, severe headache and muscle hurting. Then it causes severe bleeding and organ failure. Then the victim dies. Doctors say a person with the Ebola virus usually dies within three weeks after becoming infected. The disease spreads by people touching the body fluids(體液) of an infected person.

No medicine or treatment now exists for the disease. Recently, however, American researchers announced progress in developing a medicine to prevent Ebola hemorrhagic fever in monkeys. The scientists gave eight monkeys a small but deadly amount of the Ebola virus. They gave an experimental vaccine (疫苗) to only four of them. The monkeys that did not receive the vaccine died within a week. The vaccine prevented the disease from developing in the four monkeys that received it. All the four monkeys were healthy six months later.

The researchers said this was the first time a vaccine had protected animals similar to humans from the deadly Ebola virus. They will continue to test the vaccine on animals by giving them increasingly strong amounts of the virus.

There are few places in the world with people as friendly and scenery as beautiful as the Philippines. Of the 7,107 islands that make up the archipelago nation (群島國(guó)家), Boracay is one that has some of the best beaches the country—or even Asia—has to offer.

Boracay is a great choice for a beach holiday, especially if youre trying to escape the cold claws of winter. A lot is packed on the island, which is not much bigger than 10 square kilometers. It has many charms and attractions for the most active traveler, as well as the biggest beach bum (沖浪愛(ài)好者).

It also caters to a variety of budgets. With everything from lowkey guesthouses to fivestar resorts, local fare to gourmet meals (美食大餐), travelers will be able to spend as much or as little as they want. And like many destinations in Asia, bargaining will help you get better prices on accommodation, leisure activities, shopping and dining.

The majority of accommodations can be found along the western side of the island, along White Sand Beach and Bulabog Beach. The southern part of the beach, called Station Three, caters more to backpacker crowds, and prices tend to increase the farther you go up the beach. Station Two, 5 to 10 minutes on foot from Station Three, is the center of the islands pulsing nightlife. Another 10 minutes up from Station Two is Station One, where youll find the resort hotels and a more relaxed, comforting atmosphere.

The islands lookout point is arguably the best place for panoramic (全景的) views of Boracay and its neighboring islands. Just a few moments of breathtaking scenery and fresh sea air will rejuvenate (使精神煥發(fā)) you and make you feel you never want to leave.

There are organized trips to nearby islands, one of the most popular being Ariels Point. The Boracay Beach Club resort, which owns the island, plans outings to Ariels for a minimum of 14 people each trip.Visitors can have a day of cliffjumping, snorkeling and barbecues.

An alternative—and a sure way to see and do what you want—is to hire a boat. Ride around Boracay, stop at a restaurant frequented by locals, visit the neighboring islands, find a good snorkeling spot or find a beach where you can appreciate Boracays unspoiled beauty. Countless boat operators offer their services along the shore. Rental is typically 500 pesos ($12) an hour.

Another mustdo is a sailboat ride at sunset. White Sand and Bulabog Beaches are lined with sailboats, and theres nothing quite like watching the sun descend against the backdrop of a blue sea and sky. Theres very little that will top this bonding moment with nature.

To round up the day, head out for a tasty meal. Because of Boracays countless international visitors, almost every major food type is available. Theres New Yorkstyle pizzas, burgers galore, Mexican treats, Thai favorites, as well as Japanese udon noodles.

Theres plenty more to love and appreciate about Boracay. With its small, cozy atmosphere and welcoming people, its one destination not to pass up for that romantic getaway, family trip or holiday with friends.

48. If you want to find inexpensive accommodation, you should go along White Sand Beach and Bulabog Beach.

A. northwardB. southward

After years of civil war and being separated from the other parts of the world, Mozambique is beginning to draw in tourists looking to explore its vast coastline and tropical islands where you can meet friendly local people. Wild animals, such as elephants, buffalo, zebras, hippos, lions, crocodiles and over 300 types of birds wander about the countryside. The growing number of ecotourism holidays are creating jobs and bringing income to communities living in poverty. Recommended places to stay include Guludo and Ibo Island.

Social Practice

Social practice has been more and more popular in schools. Senior school students are asked to enter society and get some ideas of it. Surely, social practice has many advantages. Firstly, social practice can offer students a chance to contact society and meet different kinds of people. In this way students can gain some precious social experience, which will be useful to their future career. Secondly, students can apply what they have learned in class to practical work, thus knowing themselves more clearly.

However, some problems may arise if no correct guidance is made. For example, some students get overly interested in social practice and want to work fulltime, thus neglecting their studies, which will be likely to affect their future.

In order to carry out social practice smoothly, students should first know its objective. They should put their studies in the first place and see social practice just as a useful supplement, so they ought to try to strike a balance between social practice and their studies.
