Lightning (閃電) is shocking, and it happens all over the world!Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes (襲擊) every day in the world—thats thirty strikes every second.

Lightning can also be very dangerous. Every year, lightning kills people because it can start big fires or because it reaches temperatures up to 28,000 degrees centigrade. American Roy Sullivan, who worked in a park, holds the record for surviving the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1983, he was hit seven times!

So, why does lightning strike? Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub (摩擦) together, and cause atmospheric (大氣層的) changes. When this happens, it creates a static charge (靜電電荷). Lightning can strike inside the cloud, between two clouds and between a cloud and Earth. Its the last type of strike that is the most dangerous for humans. About 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and about 100 of them die as a result.

Lightning is certainly not something to toy with. When lightning strikes, its best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees, on hills or near water. Trees attract lightning. Also, do not lie down on the ground, otherwise the electricity may go through you and cause a heart disease.

Vincent Willem Van Gogh (30 March, 1853—29 July, 1890) was a Dutch Post Impressionist artist. He is considered one of the greatest artists with great influence on the 20th century art.

Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a company of art dealers (藝術(shù)商). After a brief period as a teacher, he became a missionary (傳教士). He did not begin his career as an artist until 1880; however, during the last ten years of his life, he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches (素描). He worked only with somber colors until he met Impressionism and Neo Impressionism in Paris. Van Gogh used the bright colors and style of painting in a uniquely recognizable style. Most of his best known works were produced during his final two years, when he was suffering from serious mental illness.

In 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest when he was 37. He died two days later, Theo, his brother and his best friend, at his side reported his last words as“The sadness will last forever.” It would not take long before his fame grew higher and higher.

Van Goghs mother threw away quite a number of his paintings. The only painting he sold during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Several paintings by Van Gogh rank among the most expensive paintings in the world. On March 30, 1987, Van Goghs painting Irises was sold for a record of $53.9 million at Southbys, New York. On May 15, 1990 his Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold for $83.5 million at Christies, thus setting a new price record.

26. When did Van Gogh begin his career as an artist?

27. What were the last words of Van Gogh before he died?

28. Did he sell many paintings during his lifetime?

29. Where is The Red Vineyard now?

30. How much are Irises and Portrait of Doctor Gachet?
