Effective Ways of High School English Reading Teaching

【Abstract】The high school English textbooks we currently use, no matter which version, are featured with wide selection of materials, diverse styles and abundant language knowledge, especially in the reading part, these features make it useful to cultivate students reading ability. Reading teaching plays an important role in training thinking ability, comprehension ability, generalization ability and judgment abilitys of students. However, in traditional teaching, teachers only use the text material to teach students the grammar and language knowledge, ignoring the cultivation of students reading and comprehension ability. The traditional way of asking questions about the reading comprehension often stays at the level of understanding the surface of the article. So, how to improve students reading ability, comprehension ability and language proficiency?

Firstly, teachers can use students-oriented teaching idea to give full play to the importance of students in English reading teaching. The reform of “Interpretation of High School English New Curriculum Standard” emphasize the subjectivity of the students instead of focusing on the teaching of grammar and vocabulary, making them improve themselves in experience, practice, participation and communication, and strengthening students practical ability to use language and cultivate their lifelong learning ability. Therefore, we must change the previous teacher-oriented teaching mode, making the relationship between teachers and students leaded by students themselves. In daily teaching practice, teachers should fully respect students, believe students and give back the English learning initiative to students, letting them to learn and to practice at their own willing. At the same time, teachers should also fully mobilize the enthusiasm of the students to make them truly become the masters of learning.

Secondly, teachers should strengthen the importance of discourse in English teaching. The main teaching objective of High school English reading is to help students accumulate the comprehensive ability of using English through continuous learning of vocabularies and grammars in reading context. With the continuous development of English reading ability level, students knowledge, experience, cultural awareness, habits and skills of reading have been greatly improved, so that they can read easily. Especially in the study of different types of reading materials, they can quickly understand the text. Therefore, teachers should enable students to conduct a comprehensive understanding of the paragraphs in the teaching process, making them fully understand the structure of the text in order to better grasp the main idea of the reading materials and to improve their English learning ability as well as English comprehensive application ability.

Thirdly, teachers should pay attention to the importance of extracurricular reading materials in English Teaching. The “Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standards” requires that high school graduates must accumulate reading training of more than three hundred and sixty thousand words. This teaching objective can not be reached only by using the reading materials in class. Therefore, we must strengthen the students Extracurricular autonomous learning, by selecting suitable extra-curricular reading materials for students, making them not only perfectly match the actual teaching level of students in terms of the types, themes and difficulties of the materials, but also stimulate students interest in reading, making them harvest pleasure from learning, and quickly improve reading ability. Reading materials can be varied, such as literary classics, humorous stories, historical stories, news reports, historical knowledge, newspapers and so on.

It is noted that the selected English reading materials should be expansible and highly related to the materials in textbooks, and also they can not be old-fashioned, on the contrary, they must be current, timeliness, closely links with the current hot topics with features of targeted, interesting, scientific, true, artistic as well as with a moderate level of difficulty which accord with the actual reading level of senior high school students. Increasing an appropriate amount of challenging reading training can stimulate students imagination and creativity, making them experience the continuous pleasure of successful English reading, so as to improve students reading ability and English comprehensive application ability.

Summary

High school English reading training is a long-term and complicated psychological process, and the accumulation of students comprehensive reading ability is also a complex process. To improve the students comprehensive reading ability is a long-term and arduous task which beset the middle school English teachers. Only by strengthening the students autonomous learning ability and inducing students to take extracurricular reading training, can students improve their English comprehensive application ability through the continuous learning of discourse, as well as can teachers improve their teaching efficiency.
