A unified art park with a consistent design serves as a catalyzer for the development of Zhangjiang Science City, an hi-tech mixed-use neighborhood in the Pudong district of Shanghai, China.
Project Narrative
Previously, as part of West 8’s 2017 design for the Northwest District Urban Upgrade Plan of Zhangjiang Science City, a large green belt wrapping along Bibo Road, known as Green Frame Park, was introduced. This plan sees the park extending into the Northwest area of the city, triggering further urban diversity and stimulating cultural and commercial development within the entire district.
The 8.5 hm2Zhangjiang Art Park in Shanghai’s Pudong District is situated in one of the most dynamic and vibrant urban neighborhoods of the city. Formerly two separate parks, with different characters and landscape styles, the park has been unified and renovated following a cohesive plan featuring one consistent design language. It now radiates identity and allows for an outstanding experience of the Zhangjiang Art Museum’s open-air collection. With its attractive network of pedestrian walkways and cycle tracks, the park supports a healthy lifestyle and serves as a green catalyzer for the development of Zhangjiang Science City, a hi-tech mixed-use neighborhood.
Prior, the northern park was relatively open, while in the southern park, the home of the museum, a large contemporary sculpture and installation collection had accumulated over time. To knit the different areas together, the pathway system was reworked, and a series of new bridges added to cross the park’s water features. Overgrown shrubs were removed to establish a more open and safer atmosphere with clear sightlines. Celebration of seasonality has become the new theme of planting palette. The detailing of the entire park was redesigned and now features a unified material, furniture and lighting palette.
New additions to the park include two spacious grassy lawns for the community to relax or meet up. As the park serves as a water retention area, the existing water features were redesigned to facilitate overflowing during the wet seasons. Their edges feature stepping stones and other elements that invite visitors to play and engage with the water.
The relationship between the park and the public realms of Bibo Road and Zuchongzhi Road was redefined by introducing a widened pedestrian boulevard along the edge of the park. It knits the surrounding urban fabric together and creates an attractive series of entrances and exits to the park. The main entrance plaza at Zuchongzhi Road is covered with a canopy of cherry trees and creates a gentle transition from the busy streetscape into the park.
The art pieces from the Zhangjiang Art Museum were carefully rearranged throughout the two parks and are now true highlights of the visitor’s journey.
