Oct. 15th was International White Cane Safety Day. You may have never heard of it, but it was a day to remember for Peng Baier, 17, of Nanjing Foreign Language School. After school that day, he visited his local Disabled Persons Federation. He wanted to know about the sales and feedback of his newly published book, How to Help a Disabled Person.

Since he lives with his disabled grandparents, he understands that life can be hard for this group of people. Peng decided to write the book because he wanted to create a better life for disabled people in China.

“Crossing the street is a big problem for them,” Peng said. “Speeding cars, people walking in a hurry, bikes on the sidewalk for the blind—accidents can happen everywhere. Thats why we hardly ever see disabled people on the street, even though there are millions of disabled people in China.”

Pengs book with pictures is easy to understand. It is a guide to the right and wrong ways to treat disabled people.

The teenager had 2,000 copies of his book printed. With the help of the Disabled Persons Federation, he gave them to the disabled community.

“The book is bilingual, so foreigners can also use it,” said Peng.

Peng put great effort into the book. For example, he interviewed many disabled people to get first-hand materials. He also studied textbooks from different schools for the disabled. Peng finally completed his handbook, but he still had the problem of getting it printed.

How does a high school student raise money needed for that?

With a smile, Peng said how he went about it, “I visited three local companies, dressed up in a suit and tie. I was lucky. The companies were warm-hearted and willing to give me a hand.”

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

Its no secret that summers on the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia offer clear blue waters for swimming, beautiful sunsets, historic buildings and picture-perfect beaches. The best way to see the Dalmatian Coast is from your own sea kayak (皮劃艇). But the temperature is far too high to be comfortable in the high season, so you need to wait until it drops but the sea is still warm.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is usually very crowded with visitors in July and August, but the Greek meltemi winds can be a real problem in high summer. Later in the season, they are much calmer and you can spend your time lying on the beach without being angry with the sand. The best address is the Hotel Belvedere, but the cheapest hotel is the Grace Mykonos, which is good value in September, but even better a month later.

Aeolian Islands, Italy

Sicilys beautiful seven islands often attract Oscar-winners like Robert De Niro and Russell Crowe. September is the time to visit the Aeolian Islands, as the tourists have gone. Dont miss Panarea, where the only way of getting around is on foot, and make sure you include the greenest island, Salina.

St Tropez, France

St Tropez in high season is full, but come at the end of August, and you can walk through its streets in peace and drop into its popular stores without the crowds. Its also much easier to get a meal at places such as Alain Ducasses Spoon, or to drop into bars like Nikki Beach for a drink. The best places to stay are Hotel La Ponche or Le Beauvallon, a 10-minute boat ride across the bay (海灣) in St Maxime.

The idea that you can use humor, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.

Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.

Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as its for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (認(rèn)知的) falling.

Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.

C. Prevent cognitive falling. D. Take part in physical play.

We are what we eat. That is an old expression, but one worth knowing. A recent look at diets around the world shows that people who eat healthy food—and not too much of it—live longer. But which areas of the world have the best diets? Researchers found that foods in some of the healthiest diets—Mediterranean diet, New Nordic diet, Japanese diet and French diet—may be very different, but they are all heavy on local and seasonal foods, which include more vegetables and seafood and less red meat.

Mediterranean diet contains lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil. The diet has proper amounts of fish and poultry (家禽肉). Red meat and foods high in sugar and salt are not big parts of this diet.

New Nordic diet has whole grains like oats and rye, vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and eggs, seafood, fruits, oil, low-fat milk and cheese. Sugary desserts are not common in this diet.

Japanese people are some of the longest living people on the planet, with women up to 87 years old and men up to 80. The Japanese diet is the reason for such lengths of life. The diet has many foods that are low in calories and high in nutrients. Japanese people eat a lot of seaweed, tofu, rice, vegetables and fish. The tradition there is to stop eating when your stomach feels 80 percent full.

However, French people eat fatty foods but do not get fat. And they live a long time. This phenomenon is called the “French Paradox”. The reason why the French eat fatty foods without getting fat may be simple. They eat less. Serving sizes in French restaurants and of products sold in stores are smaller than those in most countries. And generally speaking, most French people do not snack. This means they do not eat food between meals.

1. What do we know about the healthiest diets around the world according to Paragraph 1?

A. They contain lower calories.

B. They tend to be expensive.

C. They share certain similarities.

D. They stand for popular tastes.

2. What might be considered as a harmful eating habit in Japanese tradition?

A. Going high in calories. B. Eating to the fullest.

C. Having much seafood. D. Picking many foods.

3. How does the author develop the idea of the text?

A. By building connections. B. By giving reasons.

C. By listing examples. D. By making comparison.

4. What is the best title for the text?

A. What Is the Healthiest Diet on Earth?

B. How Does the Old Expression Serve?

C. Why Is a Healthy Diet So Important?

D. Where Can We Feed Ourselves Well?

I went on a trip to Thailand during the winter holiday, what was wonderful because I tried something I have never experienced before. One morning when we were walking along the beach and enjoying sunshines, someone strongly advised us to go water skiing. And I didnt dare to face the challenge because it seemed danger. My friends all encouraged me, so I finally joined in them. At first, I couldnt stop scream in fright. Later I enjoyed myself and found it amazed. From the experience I learnt that we should brave enough to try something new. Only in this way can we find the better self to meet any challenge.

Health and Diet

健康與飲食

Today, we are beginning to see more and more health problems because of poor diet and little exercise. Its high time that something should be done about this. Parents should remember that their children need to eat plenty of healthy food. These dont include most snacks, as they are high in salt or sugar. This is also true of such unhealthy food that comes from fast food. In order to keep healthy, people should go on a “green diet”. It means that there are many more vegetables than meat or sugar products. People should pay attention to what they should eat or not in order not to get fat. It is also essential to have a good rest for healthy lifestyle. Besides diet and rest, people should have proper exercise to be strong. People should have more vigorous physical activities like aerobic exercise if they set goals. It is necessary for you to have weight training if you want to gain muscles. When you are on a diet, you should know it cannot change on what food you eat or what exercise you do. It should have a life-time change for effective diet. It requires the belief of keeping healthy and goals of self-supervision.
