It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching (酷熱的) in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.

Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and—most importantly—sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater, Mr Bellow did not mind if you did.

That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Wed already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.

We left the theater around 8, just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke.

Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewarts dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. Theyre really memories of the screen, not memories of my life.

24. When did the author first live in a place with an air conditioner?

A. In 1952.B. In 1962. C. In 1972.D. In 1982.

25. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. The heat.

B. The theater.

C. The Music Man.

D. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

26. What can we know about Mr Bellow?

A. He loved children very much.

B. He was a fan of John Wayne.

C. He sold air conditioners.

D. He was a movie star.

27. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?

A. He turned out to be a great singer.

B. He enjoyed the heat wave of 1962.

C. His life has been changed by the two movies.

D. His experience at the theater is unforgettable.

On October 23, 2018, scientists came across a white octopus with “wings” that looked more like a ghost from outer space than the eight-legged ones we are used to seeing.

The octopus scientific name is Grimpoteuthis. However, thanks to the two ear-like fins on the sides of its body, it is better known as a dumbo octopus, after Disneys animated elephant. The sea creature also has eight legs connected to its body by a web of skin, which are used to increase the pace when faced with natural enemies like sharks. Dumbo octopuses can also move across the seafloor using their tentacles (觸須).

While the one caught on tape was mostly white, dumbo octopuses, like other octopuses, can change their skin colors in different environments. They, however, do not produce ink often used as a weapon by other octopuses. Instead, some dumbo octopuses have developed something sharp on their tentacles.

There are more than a dozen known species of dumbo octopuses. While most are small, measuring between 8 and 12 inches long, some can reach over 6 feet in length. Though octopuses have huge eyes, they can hardly see. However, although dumbo octopuses live in the deepest and darkest parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, where nothing can be seen, the lack of sight does not affect them. Instead, they have learned to use the suckers (吸盤) on their tentacles to feel their surroundings.

Their deep-sea environment makes these octopuses difficult to spot, which is why any sighting of the unusual creatures is met with such joy. The latest one, caught on camera by Hercules, an unmanned robot, was discovered two miles underwater around the Davidson Seamount, a volcano in California.

28. What can we learn about the white octopus from the text?

A. It looks strange. B. It has no legs.

C. It can fly out of water. D. It is common in the sea.

29. What are dumbo octopuses good at?

A. Taking on different colors.

B. Seeing in darkness with big eyes.

C. Protecting themselves with wings.

D. Fighting against the enemies with ink.

30.What is the main use of the suckers on dumbo octopuses

tentacles?

A. To keep balance. B. To increase speed.

C. To take in necessary food. D. To sense the environment.

31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. The Octopuses Studied by Scientists

B. The Dumbo Octopus Found off California Coast

C. The Elephant-like Dumbo Octopuses Spotted by Robots

D. A New Species Noticed Around the Davidson Seamount

D

Technology is threatening many jobs, but heres one you might not expect: actors. Technology in the entertainment business is on course to create digital actors who compete with live ones.

Theres a scene in the film Blade Runner 2049 thats a miracle of modern technology. Harrison Ford plays a character named Deckard, who has aged normally since 1982s Blade Runner. Deckard reunites with a character named Rachael. In the earlier film, she was played by Sean Young, 58 now. But with the special effects she hadnt aged a bit.

Fink, who has spent a long time doing special effects, says the film has made progress in replacing real actors with digital ones. It really started with extras (臨時(shí)演員). In the film Superman Returns, Superman has to land a plane in a baseball stadium. “We had 200 extras, which was what we needed,” Fink says. “But there were 50,000 people in the baseball stadium—everybody else was digital.” This advance in technology is saving film makers money but it hasnt been good for extras, who make hundreds of dollars a day.

Film makers are getting closer to being able to create full performances of actors who are no longer alive. Darren Hendler, a manager from one filming company, says some big-name actors are preparing for a day when their life as performers will continue after their death. Handler says some performers spend millions digitally preserving themselves in the companys archive (檔案庫). Hendler and other experts say we are a long way from being able to get a great performance from a dead actor.

But do audiences really want to watch dead actors? “All of us will leave the world and thats OK.” Fink says. “Let the new actors be seen. Dont hang on to something that no longer exists.”

32. What do we know about the film Blade Runner 2049?

A. It hires two famous but old actors.

B. It tells about the effect of technology.

C. It has won awards for its special effects.

D. It creates a much younger image of an actress.

33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. Effects of technology on extras.

B. The increasing demand for extras.

C. Ways of making big scenes in films.

D. Changes film makers are experiencing.

34. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A. Actors performance skills are no longer important.

B. Movie stars may be performing even after their death.

C. Special effects make the quality of films improve a lot.

D. Actors will lose their jobs because of advanced technology.

35.What does Fink think of the actors preserving themselves digitally?

A. It is unnecessary. B. It is worthwhile.

C. It is reasonable. D. It is strange.

Why Do We Find It Hard to Say “No”?

As we all know, saying “no” to others is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”.? Below are common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”:

●? You are a kind soul at heart. You dont want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.

● Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face saving is important.

● Fear of conflict (沖突).? This might lead to an ugly confrontation. Even if there isnt, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects in the future.

●? Perhaps you are worried that saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my friends wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didnt want to go. However, she didnt want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion (晉升) chances in the future.

A. Fear of losing chances.

B. Wanting to help others.

C. Wanting to keep a good relationship.

D. I slowly realized I needed to learn to say “no”.

E. It means not making others look bad or lose face.

F.You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.

G.To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand whats stopping us from it.
