French architecture firm Coldefy has re
cently revealed that it builds the largest singledomed greenhouse in the world. Covering over 20,000 square meters, the huge energy selfsufficient structure is called “Tropicalia”. Accor
ding to Coldefy, the greenhouse is set to be completed in 2024 in Frances Opal Coast.
Designs are on display at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, where Coldefy shows its architectural models, sketches and videos det
ailing about the grand plans for the dome. Renderings (效果圖) that were revealed ahead of the international exhibition show that the huge dome is situated into the green, rolling plains of Frances natural landscape. Described as a“bubble of harmony”, the structure, which houses a tropical forest featuring a range of plants and animals, from flowers and butterflies to fish and reptiles, is built to fit into the natural environ
ment. Therefore, the 35meterhigh design is partially in the ground and mixes the landscape with the addition of a second outer wall of greenery.
The roof is made from pressurized thermal(熱能的) pillows set into an aluminum frame. Inside, the dome can be heated to 82.4?塒, a temperature that can ensure the luxuriant plants. Coldefy uses advanced technology to recycle the structures thermal energy, with the remaining heat taken in by surrounding buildings.
Like many exhibitions at the Venice Bien
nale this year, which follow the theme “How will we live together?”, Coldefy designed Tropicalia with the health of the planet in mind. Tropicalia is meant to be a place of wonder as well as education, providing an opportunity to experience the fragility of the earths ecosystem up close.
Elsewhere in the Biennale, environmental concerns are set to dominate the show. The Nordic pavilion will be transformed into an experimental cohousing project which aims to reduce energy consumption and cut carbon emissions.
