Luoto is an urban development project for the 2020s in the city of Turku on the southwest coast of Finland. The largely privately-funded project aims to develop the existing railyard area into a new landmark and urban cluster featuring a multipurpose arena and other sports and cultural venues, a hotel, experience centre, offices, housing and more, providing a wealth of services, entertainment and shared space for residents and visitors alike.
PES-Architects’ design for the area, "Luoto" (skerry), won the invited architecture competition in 2018, and has since been further developed in close cooperation with the project developers, clients, stake holders and residents.
The focal point of the approximately 180,000 m2development is a central "hill" housing a 10,000-seat multipurpose arena and hotel. The building serves as the platform for round-the-clock activities throughout the year.Visitors can ascend along scenic terraces to the rooftop garden to enjoy panoramic views over the historic centre towards the sea.
The new development will also integrate the historical Veturitalli engine shed and the Logomo cultural centre. The area and its services are designed to be easily accessible by public transport, bicycle and foot.
