Years ago when Sam Haskell was nine, a television commercial attracted his attention. P&G (寶潔公司) had launched an ad campaign with the “Cheer Man”, a character who visited neighborhoods around the country. If he rang your doorbell and you had a box of Cheer (a brand name of P&G’s detergent) or even something like “Cheer” written on a piece of paper, you’d receive ten dollars.
Sam was convinced the Cheer Man would come to his home in Mississippi. He made a three-foot by four-foot sign with the Cheer logo and hung it in his bedroom. He was ready, and he told his classmates and everyone he talked to that the Cheer Man was coming to his house. People laughed at him, but his mom kept encouraging him to dream. Time went by and the advertisement was no longer on TV. Sam stored the sign in his closet — but he still believed the Cheer Man was coming.
The next summer, when Sam was ten, he went to a neighborhood birthday party. Playing soccer on the lawn, they heard what sounded like someone shouting through a megaphone. As the noise got closer, they saw it was a car with a loudspeaker on the roof — a man was yelling, “Cheer! Cheer! Cheer... is here!”
Sam watched in awe. The car was still several blocks away, but he knew in his heart that it was going to his house. Sam ran home, grabbed his sign and rushed back outside holding it over his head. His heart pounded in excitement.
And then, just as he’d dreamed, the Cheer Man stopped in front of his house, walked up to Sam and said “You get the ten dollars.”
Young Sam learned a valuable lesson that day about believing in a dream. He discovered that everything is possible. The knowledge paved the way for Sam’s future as a television executive and producer in Hollywood. The next morning, he discovered the car’s window had been broken, along with his dreams for the future. “Everything important to me was on that computer.” said Fortune, “Every paper I’d written and all the programs I needed for my tests. Every letter I was working on for job applications. I felt sick.”

Apart from just throwing back your handsome reflection, in the near future a magical mirror might tell you a lot about what lies beneath the surface. That’s the goal of researchers who are developing a high-tech mirror that is designed to deliver a health appraisal and report just by studying your facial features.
The Wize Mirror is being developed by a group of researchers and industry partners from seven European countries. The Mirror’s aim is to stamp out cardiovascular (心臟血管的) diseases, including stroke (中風) and heart disease, which are the leading causes of death around the world. Catching the early signs of these diseases, researchers believe, is the best medicine for reducing health care costs.
Toward that end, the Wize Mirror wants to gather all sorts of information about you at just a glance.
Its cameras record the day-to-day changes in your facial features so as to examine known markers of stress, anxiety and disease. A full 3-D facial scanner lets you know if you’ve gained or lost weight, and the oxygen levels in the blood. Finally, gas sensors measure your breath to determine how much you drink or smoke, and if you’re at risk of disease.
And, of course, you can use it to get your hair just right, too.
After gathering all this information, the Wize Mirror, which works like a touchscreen computer, will display a score showing how healthy you appear. It’ll also provide a few tips on how you can improve your health.
So someday, perhaps, your mirror will tell you everything your friends are too careful to say.

C. To classify the information about one’s face.

14. What is researchers’ belief for reducing health care costs?
