I. 閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。(30分)

(A)

Imagine you are on a cold mountain with steep rocks around. As you climb higher, the air gets thinner and the sun’s rays stronger. Just before you reach the snowline, you find what you came for—a small white flower, the edelweiss (火絨草), which only grows in alpine (高山的) areas.

Plants face many challenges living in alpine areas, and only 200 kinds of plants can grow there. Plants rely on oxygen, water, and sunlight to make their own food through the process of photosynthesis(光合作用). The alpine means less CO2, which makes the process more difficult. It also brings plants closer to the sun. The sunlight is so strong that it can burn a plant’s leaves. There is little water here, so the soil is dry and rocky. You also won’t find high trees because the cold wind would blow them over!

Alpine plants have advantages that help them survive the bad conditions. Like all alpine plants, the edelweiss stays close to the ground to avoid the wind. The cold water is deep underground, so the edelweiss grows very deep roots. Its leaves have a thick covering, which protects the plant from the wind and the sun’s bright rays. All these special characteristics help it grow, but very slowly.

The edelweiss can live in the conditions, but humans can’t. Climbing in the high and cold mountains is dangerous and difficult. This is why the edelweiss became such a special flower. Long ago, a young man would pick an edelweiss flower to prove his love to a girl, although it was risky. Many men died while trying. Getting the flower proved that the man was physically strong, brave, and devoted.

Alpine plants can’t spread seeds, so it’s difficult for new plants to grow. Once all the edelweiss flowers are gone in an area, they will not regrow. Governments help protect the edelweiss because it is considered an endangered plant.

1. The first two paragraphs mainly describe ____.

A. the process of photosynthesis

B. the appearance of the edelweiss

C. the growing environment of the edelweiss

D. the challenge of mountain climbing

2. The edelweiss can survive in the alpine conditions partly because ____.

A. it grows high and strong??????????????????? B. it can get more sunlight

C. its leaves’ covering is thin????????????????? D. its deep roots can get water

3. What can we learn about the edelweiss from the text?

A. It is planted in large quantities.??? ?????????? B. It is a symbol of bravery.

C. It is a shade loving plant.????????????????? D. It spreads its seeds by wind.

4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To introduce a special flower.???????????? B. To compare different alpine plants.

C. To warn people not to pick flowers.??? D. To encourage people to protect plants.

(B)

Dear Anne,

I like your column very much. I met a girl four years ago at a gym. She was the one who originally approached me and we became good friends. Then one day, she made me really angry, so angry that I just left and we never saw each other again.

Looking back, I really regret ending things that way. It was a cowardly act on my part, but I had a terrible temper at that time and let the smallest thing get to me. Recently, I’ve started thinking about her again and I looked up her e-mail address. I thought about writing to say “Hi” and apologize for what I did but I’m not sure. She could still be angry with me, or maybe she has forgotten me. I feel very lonely and I want to see her again. What should I do?

Tom

Dear Tom,

She may still be angry with you, and she may have forgotten the friendship between you, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve an apology. Tom, how many of us have wished for the day that someone who treated us badly saw the light and finally owned up? But we rarely get that kind of expected result. So sure, e-mail her and say “Hi”.

Tell her you have been thinking about her and just want to apologize for getting angry and being a coward by walking out on her. But you should remember if she thinks you’re apologizing just because you are lonely, she might dismiss your sincerity. Therefore, don’t mention that. If she wants to see you again, she’ll make sure that happens.

Even if she doesn’t want to be your friend, I can assure you, she’ll appreciate the gesture. And it might make you think twice next time you get angry.

Anne

5. In the letter, Anne is probably ____.

A. Tom’s friend? ???? B. Tom’s teacher?? ?????? C. a woman reporter?? D. a columnist

6. What is troubling Tom?

A. He can’t get in touch with his former friend.

B. He regrets letting his former friend leave him.

C. He doesn’t know whether to apologize to his former friend.

D. He is uncertain whether his former friend can forgive him.

7. The underlined phrase “owned up” in the third paragraph probably means “ ____”.

A. returned one’s wealth?????? ????????????? B. admitted one’s mistake

C. recovered one’s courage???? ??????????? D. controlled one’s feeling

8. Anne wants to tell Tom that ____.

A. an apology is better late than never ??????? B. he should think twice before he gets angry

C. it’s no use crying over spilt milk??;??????? D. he should answer for his wrong doings

(C)

Below is some advice on how to sleep better.

1. Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule

Go to bed at the same time every night. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss or turn. Try not to break this routine on weekends when it may be tempting to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change in small daily increments, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day. As with your bedtime, try to maintain your regular wake time even on weekends.

2. Fight after dinner drowsiness (睡意)

If you find yourself getting sleepy before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating to avoid falling asleep, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later in the night and have trouble getting back to sleep.

3. Keep your room dark and cool

When it’s time to sleep, make sure that your environment is dark. Even dim light—especially those from TV or computer screens—can confuse the body clock. Heavy curtains or shades can help block light from windows, or you can try an eye mask to cover your eyes. The temperature of your bedroom also affects sleep. A bedroom that is too hot or too cold can interfere with quality sleep.

4. Turn off your television

Many people use the television to fall asleep or relax at the end of the day. You may even have a television in your bedroom. However, television actually stimulates the mind, rather than relaxing it. Part of this is due to content. Late night news and prime time shows frequently have disturbing, violent material. Even non-violent programming can have commercials that are jarring and loud.

5. Exercise early

Exercise helps promote restful sleep if it is done several hours before you go to bed. Exercise can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly—as long as it’s done at the right time. Try to finish exercising at least three hours before bed or work out earlier in the day.

6. Consult your doctor

Use a sleep diary and talk to your doctor. Note what type of sleep problem is affecting your sleep or if you are sleepy when you wish to be awake and alert. Try these tips and record your sleep and sleep related activities in a sleep diary. If problems continue, discuss the sleep diary with your doctor. There may be an underlying cause and you will want to be properly diagnosed. Your doctor will help treat the problem or may refer you to a sleep specialist.

9. To prevent yourself from sleeping too much on weekends, you should ____.

A. go to bed at usual time?????????????? ????? B. go to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual

C. go to bed at any time???????????????? D. make an adjustment to your bedtime

10. Which of the following makes it easier for you to have a sound sleep?

A. Watching violent programmes before going to bed.

B. Using heavy curtains or an eye mask to block light.

C. Changing your bedtime only a little every day.

D. Completing your workout just before bedtime.

11. The following ways can help fight after dinner drowsiness EXCEPT ____.

A. making a telephone call???????? ?????????? B. doing some washing

C. having a rest on the sofa?????????????????? D. getting clothes ready for the next day

12. If your sleep problems continue, you’d better ____.

A. move into a new house???????????????????? B. turn to the doctor for help

C. change your present job?????????????????? D. discuss it with your family
