Xi Jinping Attends Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference
On the evening of October 14, 2021, President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference and delivered a keynote speech via video link.
Xi put forward a five-pronged proposal: First, uphold open interplay and enhance connectivity by strengthening both hard connectivity of infrastructure and soft connectivity of institutions and rules, and by developing four-dimensional connectivity of land, sea, air, and the Internet. Second, uphold common development and promote fairness and inclusiveness, putting emphasis on enhancing North-South and SouthSouth cooperation and scaling up support for developing transport infrastructure in the least developed countries and landlocked developing countries. Third, uphold an innovation-driven approach and create more drivers for development, promoting deep integration of new technologies with the transport sector. Fourth, uphold ecological conservation as a priority and pursue green and low-carbon development, fostering a green and low-carbon way of transport. Fifth, uphold multilateralism and improve global governance while advancing cooperation in such areas as poverty reduction, health, transport and logistics, and infrastructure development in the context of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Xi announced that China will set up a Global Innovation and Knowledge Center for Sustainable Transport as a contribution to global transport development.
Li Keqiang Attends the 130th China Import and Export Fair
On October 14, 2021, Premier Li Keqiang attended the opening ceremony of the 130th China Import and Export Fair (the Canton Fair) and the Pearl River International Trade Forum and delivered a keynote speech in Guangzhou. Over 100 representatives of foreign governments and international organizations and heads of multinational companies attended the event online.
Li Keqiang said that the event has been held non-stop amid shifting circumstances for 65 years, and has scored remarkable successes. The Fair has also witnessed how companies from across the world shared in Chinas development opportunities and achieved mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.
Li indicated that China will keep foreign trade policies consistent and stable, and continue to import more quality products and services. A number of integrated pilot zones for cross-border e-commerce will be established before the end of the year. Development of new business forms such as overseas warehouses will be accelerated and overseas smart logistics platforms will be promoted. He emphasized that China will continue to foster a market-oriented, world-class business environment governed by a sound legal framework to see that the country remains an alluring destination for foreign investment. He indicated that China will further shorten the negative lists on the market access for foreign investment, zero out manufacturing items on the negative list in pilot free trade zones, and keep easing access to the services sector. Meanwhile, China will support foreign investors in increasing investment in such areas as medium- and high-end manufacturing and modern services and in the central and western regions.
The participating foreign leaders spoke highly of the Fairs significant role in promoting international trade and investment cooperation. They expressed strong confidence in the prospects of Chinas economic development.
Yang Jiechi Meets U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan
On October 6, 2021, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi met with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Zurich, Switzerland.
The two sides agreed to strengthen strategic communication, properly manage differences, avoid conflict and confrontation, seek mutual benefits and win-win results, and work together to bring China-U.S. relations back on the right track of sound and steady development.
Yang Jiechi pointed out that the U.S. side needs to have a deep understanding of the mutually beneficial nature of China-U.S. relations and correctly understand Chinas domestic and foreign policies and strategic intentions. China opposes defining China-U.S. relations as “competitive.”
Yang Jiechi expounded Chinas solemn position on issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, Xizang, and human rights as well as maritime issues, urging the U.S. side to truly respect Chinas sovereignty, security, and development interests.
The U.S. side expressed its adherence to the one-China policy.
The two sides also exchanged views on climate change and regional issues of common concern. They agreed to maintain regular dialogue and communication on important issues.
