When it comes to Yuan Longping, we will think of him as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. However, Yuan's private life is less well-known, and involved reading, swimming, playing the violin and so on. From a potential national swimming athlete to his love of the violin, here are some of the lesser-known aspects of Yuan's life.
Yuan Longping has a unique reading habit: recitation. In the first year of high school, the school held a speech contest. Yuan Longping and the other two 1)contestants in the class selected the speech and read aloud on the roof of the 2)dormitory building in the morning. Since then, he has found that reading aloud is a good reading method: it can strengthen memory, 3)stimulate thinking, deepen understanding of articles, and can also train Mandarin and exercise lung capacity. Even after he started working, he still maintainedthis reading habit. After each reading, he devoted himself to the field to study hybrid rice. He once used “thinking gymnastics” to describe reading. He always felt that his thinking would be particularly active and his energy would be particularly 4)abundant.
Yuan is also a good swimmer. When Yuan was 8 years old, his family left Hankou, Hubei, and boarded a ship for Taoyuan county, Hunan. On the journey, the young Yuan fell overboard, and was saved by a worker on one of the passing boats. This apparently inspired Yuan to learn to swim — he wanted to be able to save others just as the boatman had saved him.
Yuan began to learn from a classmate in exchange for teaching him maths. Yuan became so 5)proficient that he went on to represent Sichuan Province in a national swimming competition in Chengdu. Yuan finished fourth in his race, while the top three entered China's national swimming team program.
Yuan picked up the hobby of playing the violin from a music lover at college. He believed that the violin can 6)interpret “the sound that touches the depths of the soul” and music is the warmth that has accompanied him throughout his life. In Yuan's home, there were many music discs, all of which are works by 7)masters such as Tchaikovsky and Schubert.
Yuan once said, “People are like seeds. We should be a good seed.” We should be a good one in physical and mental. Yuan 8)ploughed himself the field, 9)indifferent to fame and wealth. With the attitude of a farmer, he enriched his spirit and harvested the 10)fragrance of the soil. Not only did he accomplish great things, but he also had a unique soul. As middle school students, we should also find our own interests and life ideals like Yuan.
