Cultural misunderstanding
Learning in a different country can be exciting, but it can also be confusing be- cause of different cultures. When I studiedin America, miscommunications sometimes happened.
When the teacher asked us to have a debate in class, I stated my idea. The stu- dents in another group extended their in- dexfingers, which made me feel confused, as extending index fingers means one in my country. Later,I knew that it means “disagreement”.
During my stay in America, Iexperi- enced and learned a lot about American culture, which was significant for me to adapt to my new life.

Paragraph 1:
Pointing to the bookshelfin the front of the room,Miss Bridwell began to tell her story. She said,“When I was probably about your age, my dad once said writing was not a career. I was juststraightforward with my dad. I simply told him the truth.I explained that I enjoyed writing, and that I wanted to get better and to write. I guess my honesty came through, and he believed me."Jenna listened carefully, with a flicker of delight across her eyes.Afterlistening, she stood up and left the office with satisfied smiles. Paragraph 2:
It's beyond argument that Miss Brid- well's story encouraged Jenna a lot. So she decided to discuss her ideas with her parents again. It didn't happen immediately, but in the end, they came to understand that Jenna's love of drawing comics was more important than whether it was the career they wanted for Jenna. So as long as we can have heart-to-heart communication with each other,we will have a better understanding.

When Mrs Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too. She said in an encouraging tone, “It is really a good idea. I can help you do that.”With excitement shining in their eyes, the children were busy popping the corn immediately while their mother went out to invite Bernard. When coming back, she brought Bernard with her,who had been told everything. Seeing the well popped corn and fully filled paper bags which were neatly arranged in the basket, he was moved to tears.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Everything went amazingly! Soon he returned with an empty basket. Never had he earned so much money before in his life.Finding the money would all be his, he was so delighted that he could hardly speak. John,Hlarry, and Clara were also excited, with their faces lit up. Neigh-boring people began to know the story and the "little pop-corn boy”. They all wanted to buy the boy's popped corn and every week he had at least fifty cents to take home. With the money, Bernard's father became better and smiles began to appear on everyone's face.

The book I like best
I have read many books, but my favorite is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bront?. Here are the reasons.
First, it has been one of the most popular novels that has been widely read all over the world since it was published. Second, it is about a poor girl living an independent life after working hard to get out of difficult situations.
I like it best because it conveys a positive message: In the face of difficulties we should never lose confidence. If we depend on ourselves and keep on trying, we can overcome any difficulty and live happily.

To protect traditional Chinese culture, our school held the Traditional Drama on Campus last Friday. The details are as follows.
Firstly, some experts were invited to give us lectures on local drama and then some famous artists put on performances in the school auditorium. It was a feast for our eyes. This activity was warmly welcomed. Not only does it provide us with a great opportunity to appreciate the charm of Chinese drama, it also helps us to have a better understanding of Chinese culture.I hope more similar activities will be held in the future.

Let's share housework with our parents
Dear friends,
Good habits benefit us greatly.Pd like to appeal to you to form the habit of sharing in the housework.
Every family member should share in the housework, especially teenagers, because one day we have to live an independent life. By doing some chores, we can develop a sense of responsibility. We can also acquire some basic life skills. Besides,we can develop a pleasant rela- tionship with our parents. Sharing in the housework is beneficial to us, so let's do housework and learn to be responsible for ourselves.
Let's take action from now on!
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Jack,
Various optional courses are offered in our school this term. I am writing to tell you which optional course I would like to take.
I want to take the calligraphy course because “the style is the man".One's writing style resembles one's personality. So it is important to improve my handwriting.More- over, calligraphy is part of Chinese culture, which helps me know how Chinese charac- ters are formed.I have one calligraphy class weekly, when experts give lectures on how to write beautifully. I am sure I will like it. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
