Space tourism by giant space balloons
Space tourism is not all about rockets — giant space balloonscan do it too! The Spain-based company HALO Space completed thefirst test flight of its balloon. This marked another company joining thecompetition of making space tourism a reality. During the test flight, theballoon reached an altitude of 37 kilometers where passengers wouldbe able to view Earth from the blackness of space, according to DailyMail.
How does a space balloon work? The balloon is usually filled withhelium[氦氣] or hydrogen[氫氣], which are both much lighter than air, andit flies because of the buoyancy[ 浮力] force. According to NASA, theballoon is filled with the amount of gas that will give it enough lift to getoff the ground and rise. As it rises, the gas inside the balloon expandsbecause atmospheric pressure drops.
Another company that gives out space tours by balloons, the USbasedSpace Perspective claims that the trips are about relaxation. Thecraft rises slowly at 12 miles (about 19.3 kilometers) per hour, and ittakes about two hours to get to the 30 km altitude. Since its successful?test flight in June 2022, Space Perspective started selling tickets forspace flights in 2024, and it has already sold out. The company nowbuys ships to turn them into “floatingspaceports”, reported Daily Mail.By lifting the craft from ships onthe sea, there will be more launchopportunities, such as flights atsunrise and sunset.
