It can be difficult to watch a friend deal with painful1 things. This could beanything from a death of a family member or loved one, an illness, a fight withsomeone, to a failing grade2 in school. You can try to do some things to cheer yourfriends up and tell them youre there for them.
1. Listen to your friends.
Listening is one of the most important things you can do for someone who is nothappy. Active listening shows that you care about your friends and they are beingheard. When youre really listening, make sure that there are no other distractions3.Try to make eye contact4 with them while theyre talking. It shows that yourepaying attention.
2. Be careful about giving advice.
Tell a similar5 story or experience that youve gone through if you think itmight help. Any lessons that you learned can be really helpful. After listening, givethem advice if they ask for it. Let them know you have an idea of what they coulddo. If you dont, be honest6 to yourself and them. Take them to a person who has abetter idea for the problem than you have.
3. Spend time with your friends.
When people are sad, its not good for them to stay alone for too much time. You and your friends can do something to relax, such as do sports, go shopping, listen to music, watch a movie, or have some delicious food. Dont keep sayingthings like “cheer up”. Dont tell others how to feel. Let them feel and expresstheir emotions7. It will be much helpful to cheer them up.
A friend in need is a friend indeed8. Try your best to help your friends andsome day you maybe helped as well.
