The annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival opens in late December, though the opening ceremony is on January 5 each year, and lasts for around 2 months, till late February.
The Ice and Snow Festival is a citywide celebration that takes place in the entire city of Harbin. Some of the favorite venues include Sun Island, Songhua River, Stalin Park, Zhaolin Park and the Ice and Snow World.
Zhaolin Park is a must-see during the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival because it has a traditional program that shows the most excellent ice lanterns. With water, lights and the natural ice from the Songhua River as the material, the ice lanterns are made by freezing water, piling up ice or snow, then carving, decorating, etc. The Ice Lantern Garden Party has been held here annually since 1963. There are numerous pieces of ice artworks in the park arranged in groups according to different themes. A great variety of objects such as buildings, gardens, flowers, waterfalls, European-styled churches, lions, tigers, dragons are carved from ice. In the daytime, the ice sculptures are magnificent and lifelike. Moreover, with the interspersion of the sparkling colored lights embedded in the sculptures at night, the park becomes a glorious and amazing ice world.
The Ice and Snow World is the main venue of Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival. It came into being in 1999. It is one of the largest ice and snow amusement parks in the world with an area of over 600,000 square meters. The inspiration for the ice and snow sculptures here partly is derived from world-famous architectures such as the Great Wall, the Egyptian Pyramids, etc. Taking a walk amongst those bright and glittery ice towers is really mind-blowing and unforgettable!
In addition to Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, there are similar events that take place throughout the world. Some of the prominent ice and snow festivals include the Sapporo Festival in Japan, the Canadian Winter Carnival held in Quebec, and the Oslo Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Norway.
