Chinese scientists have discovered multi-ple types of glass material in lunar samples re-trieved by the Chang e-5 mission, includingnatural fiberglass which has been found for thefirst time and could provide important supportfor future lunar base construction, according tothe Institute of Physics under the Chinese Acad-emy of Sciences.
The material, which includes spherical, el-lipsoidal and dumbbell- shaped glass beads aswell as colloidal items with a porous structureand sputtering material in fluid form, have alsobeen found.
By analyzing the morphology, composi-tion, microstructure and formation of the mate-rial, which originated from mineral melting andrapid cooling caused by meteorite impacts onthe lunar surface, researchers found there weremultiple ways the material was formed.
The glass with a higher length-to-diameterratio was formed under lower temperatures andspeed when a meteorite impacted the lunar sur-face, reflecting milder impact events comparedwith the formation of glass beads which have alower length-to-diameter ratio.
