Caiwei majors in architecture. In college, sheread about China’s culture and history through itsarchitecture. Furthermore, she watched many ChineseTV series, films, and literature... Under the subtleinfluence of Chinese culture, she grew increasinglyfond of China. When she realized that the best wayto understand a country is through its language, shestarted learning Chinese in July 2020. Initially, shefound the complexity of the language overwhelming.Besides, it was a spontaneous decision with littlepreparation. However, a video of a Brazilian Chineseteacher gave her infinite motivation to continue.
Caiwei dedicates two to three hours every day tostudying Chinese. She passed the HSK3 proficiencyexam in just five months, a progress she had notanticipated. In 2021, she tried different study methodsto challenge herself: she read Chinese novels, watchedChinese TV series with Chinese subtitles, and evenused Chinese subtitles while watching American TVseries. Whenever she encountered unfamiliar words, she wrote them multiple times, gradually accumulatingan extensive vocabulary. She also enrolled in onlineChinese courses to enhance her speaking skills.
While learning Chinese, she excels in herarchitecture classes. Chinese language has given herinspiration, and even her final graduation thesis isrelated to Chinese culture. When writing the thesis, she often read academic journals and books in thelanguage. She believes that through writing her thesis, her Chinese proficiency could improve even further.

When Caiwei used fluent Mandarin to explain the“one world, one family” philosophy through the eyesof an architecture student on the stage of the 22nd“Chinese Bridge” competition, who could believe thatshe had been learning Chinese for only two and a halfyears?
During her speech on stage, Caiwei illustratedhow “a great chasm can be turned into a road.” TheChinese language serves just as one such bridge thatconnects cultures, linking China and Brazil. It enablespeople in Brazil to engage with Chinese culture, gaina deeper appreciation of it, and promote friendshipbetween the two nations. It transforms what onceseemed like a distant journey into an accessiblepathway.
Caiwei attributed her remarkable progress inChinese language to intensive training prior to thecompetition, consistent practice during the event, andface-to-face interactions with friends who share herpassion for Chinese culture. She firmly believes thateveryone can contribute to the bridge of friendshipbetween China and Brazil, and she expresses her desireto participate in cultural exchanges between the twocountries.
Two dreams
Two and a half years of Chinese learning and theparticipation in the “Chinese Bridge” competition havenurtured dreams in Caiwei’s heart.
As Caiwei gains increasingly profound understandingof China, she has fallen in love with Chinese architecture,Chinese culture, and China itself. From the Great Wallin Beijing to the Fujian Tulou (earth buildings of Fujian),from the Foguang Temple of the Tang Dynasty to theLiuli Pagoda of the Ming Dynasty, she discovered anirresistible charm in Chinese architecture.
Now Caiwei has two dreams: one is to build a “ChineseCulture Center” in Brazil, a place where more people canunderstand China. The other is to study in China andpursue a master degree on ancient Chinese architecture.
Brazil and China are located on opposite sides ofthe Earth, with a vast distance of 16,000 kilometersin between and stark differences in climate and timezones. Nevertheless, this Brazilian girl has formedan unbreakable bond with China due to her Chineselearning experience and is committed to becoming anambassador of Chinese culture.
It is amazing that language could serve as a bridge to connect people and facilitate cultural exchanges.
