For more than 50 years, Nissim Kahlonhas lived in an unusual way on the coast inIsrael. He started by setting up a tent on thebeach in Herzliya, not far from the city of TelAviv. Over time, he started making a cave in thestone cliffs. Little by little, he made a livingspace. He started to make stairs and windows. He built up the stone walls. Now, his home is a tourist attraction. People come to the beachjust to see what he has made.
However, officials in Israel want the 77yearoldto leave. The Environmental ProtectionMinistry says Kahlon's cave home is illegal. The ministry says the cave home makesthe traditional homes above it unsafe. The officials worry the cave would damage thestructure of the cliff. Kahlon says his home is safe as an example of living without waste. He used everything he cut out of the stone.
The last time the Israeli government told him to leave was in 1974. He received adocument that said his home would be torn down. But it never happened. He did not hear ofany government concerns for almost 50 years.
Officials are worried about the homes at the top of the cliff. However, the Israeli?government is concerned about more than that. There is an old weapons production centeronly about 400 meters north of Kahlons home, which closed 30 years ago after an accidentalexplosion. The government worries there are still some explosive weapons nearby. InJune of 2023, an explosion blew a large hole in the sand not far from Kahlon's cave.
Some say the Israeli government is using its concerns about unexploded weapons topush Kahlon out of his home. The local leaders in Herzliya say they have a new place forKahlon to live but Kahlon says he wants to stay.
