“Am I beautiful now, Mama?”
“What do you mean, now?”
“Now that my hair is all done, I’m beautiful, right?”
I had just put the brush down by my side when my stomach immediately somersaulted (翻滾) in guilt and fear and my mind was instantly puzzled with confusion. Why was she questioning this? Didn’t she already know? I told her how beautiful she was every morning when she rose for the new day and every night as she drifted off to sleep. I wanted to yell that this world attached too many attempts to “make pretty” and commercialized the use of product after product.
I tried to control my heart and explained to her, “Baby girl, you are beautiful every day because you are kind and smart, creative and brave. You use good manners and stand up for yourself.” I put my hand on her heart and pulled her in close. “But styling your hair doesn’t make you beautiful. And wearing certain colors or styles can’t do it either. What makes you beautiful is the person you are. Do you know where beauty really comes from?”
She thought for a minute. I gently tapped my fingers that were still resting on her heart. “From inside here. And your heart shines so brightly that it makes you incredibly beautiful.” I could feel her heart start to beat a little stronger and a smile appeared across her face.
I squeezed her tight and added, “You are so beautiful, baby girl, and I hope you never stop believing it. And I hope you never let anyone tell you differently.”
She stood up and brushed her freshly braided hair off her shoulder.
“I know, Mama. I’m beautiful because I’m ME.”
The guilt and fear were washed away. The confusion was clarified.
“Hey Mama,” she said as she started to walk away. “You are beautiful, too.”

Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most successful, influential and beloved women in American history, once said that she had one regret: she wished she had been prettier. Who hasn’t felt the same way? 1 To overcome them, we spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, diet products, fashion and so on.
Why do we care so much about how we look? Because beauty is powerful. Because even when we learn to value people mostly for being kind, wise and funny, we are still moved by beauty. No matter how much we argue against it, beauty has a great influence on us. 2
Aristotle said, “Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction.” 3 We simply treat beautiful people better than we do others. Attach a photograph of a beautiful author to an essay, and people will think that it is more creative and more intelligently written than exactly the same essay accompanied by the photo of a homely (相貌平平的) author.
Our sensitivity to physical beauty is not something we can control at will. 4 Experiments conducted by psychologist Judith Langlois showed that even small babies prefer to look at attractive faces.
5 Just as Nancy Etcoff says, “We have to understand beauty, or we will always be enslaved by it.” If you aim to be wise, kind and funny, it doesn’t mean that you can’t also try your best to look beautiful. There’s no reason to feel guilty about being moved by beauty’s power. It moves us all.
A. We are born with it.
B. It’s not fair, but it’s true.
C. There is simply no escape.
D. It actually does not make any sense.
E. We are all proud of our achievements.
F. We are all too aware of our physical imperfections.
G. However, there are more important things in life than beauty.

Where do you find beauty? One American photographer is finding beauty in unexpected places. And a new documentary about his work might help change the traditional standards of “who” is beautiful.
Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashion photographer to turn his lens to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences. He said what changed his perception of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino (患白化病的) girl.
“As an artist, I don’t see bvKfpFl4E+CntDU8XBf/2Ig==eauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So it was my initial intention that opened my eyes a little wider,” said Guidotti.
Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.
The cast and crew recently hosted a screening at Georgetown University in Washington. One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. “I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day he took my picture and I felt so good like there’s somebody who really loves me and sees me for who I am,” said Waithera.
The documentary is the idea of producer Joanna Rudnick. After seeing Guidotti’s photos, she decided to tell his story. Rudnick and Guidotti are traveling from city to city to promote On Beauty. “As we travel from community to community, we’re taking photographs and we’re encouraging individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They’re seeing beauty in their reflection but we’re also encouraging their families and they in turn are encouraging their communities as well,” said Guidotti.
1. What made Guidotti change his understanding of beauty?
A. An albino girl. B. His job as a fashion photographer.
C. Influence from his co-workers. D. The beauty on the covers of magazines.
2. What can we learn about Positive Exposure?

According to scientists, it’s a fundamental part of our human nature to look for these qualities—the full lips, clear skin and strong shoulders—in a mate.
Not everyone agrees with this idea, however. “Our hardwiredness (固定思維模式) can be changed by all sorts of expectations—mainly cultural,” says C. Loring Brace, a researcher at the University of Michigan. Look in most Western fashion magazines, for example; the women on the pages are thin. But is this the “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Douglas Yu, a biologist from Great Britain, says no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. Yu found in one study, for example, that native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded as overweight in Western culture.
Take another example: In every culture, one’s hairstyle sends a clear message. In the Huli tribe (部落) of Papua New Guinea, men grow their hair long as a symbol of health and strength. Teenage boys in this culture learn from a young age to style and decorate their hair—a behavior more commonly associated with the opposite gender (性別) in many cultures. It is also the men in this culture who are the objects of beauty. For certain festivals and celebrations, men dress up and paint their faces. The more colorful a man is, the more attractive he is considered.
For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to define exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits that are considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always obey a single, uniform standard. A person’s cultural background, for example, may influence what he or she finds attractive in others. In the end, beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder.
5. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Man has a desire to look good.
B. Health and strength are equal to beauty.
C. Man needs several qualities to look attractive.
D. There is a generally accepted opinion about beauty.
6. What does the underlined word “subjective” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Personal. B. Complex. C. Powerful. D. Modern.
7. What is considered attractive in the Huli tribe?
A. Clear skin. B. Straight hair. C. Colorful men. D. Overweight females.
8. What does the text mainly tell us?
Aea02215ce4af90baca6e2d584fd25733. Beauty is culture-specific. B. Beauty is reflected in lifestyles.
C. Beauty has uniform standards. D. Geography determines attitudes.
