(1) more than后面跟名詞,意為“不僅僅是,不只是”。
Hibernation is more than sleep. 冬眠不僅僅是睡覺。
(2) more than與數(shù)詞連用,意思是“多于,大于,超過(guò)”。
There are more than two thousand students in our school.
我們學(xué)校有兩千多名學(xué)生。
(3) more than與形容詞或分詞連用,表示“非常,十分”。
They were more than happy to see us come back from the expedition.
看到我們遠(yuǎn)征歸來(lái),他們異常高興。
(4) more than與動(dòng)詞連用,起著加強(qiáng)語(yǔ)氣的作用。
His progress in English learning more than encouraged him to learn the subject well. 在英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)方面的進(jìn)步激勵(lì)他學(xué)好這門功課。
(5) more than和含有情態(tài)動(dòng)詞的句子連用。有否定意義,表示“是……難以……”或“超過(guò)了……所能”之意。
This problem is more than a child like Jack can settle.
這一問(wèn)題超出了像杰克這樣的小孩的解決能力。
(6) no more than 意思是“僅僅,不過(guò),只是”。
Their new flat has no more than 60 square meters.
他們的新居只有60平方米。
(7) not more than 表示“至多,不超過(guò)”。
Lying on the ground was a peasant boy of not more than seventeen.
躺在地上的那個(gè)農(nóng)家男孩最多只有十七歲。
(8) more…than…中,肯定“more”后面的,而否定“than”后面的,約等于“是……而不是……”。
Hearing the loud noise, the boy was more surprised than frightened.
聽見這么大的聲音,這個(gè)男孩是吃驚而不是恐懼。
(9) no more…than…表示“同……一樣不……”,隱含二者都不好的意思。
I can no more do that than anyone else.
別人不能做這件事,我也不能做。
