Plot Synopsis
Episode Ten: Imprisoned!
Candy: Well, this is certainly a fine mess we've gotten ourselves into.
Xiaoqiang: It's not my fault! How could I have known William was going to betray us?
Candy: Hey, I'm not blaming you, or anyone. We're all stuck in this together.
Adrian: I suppose Snow White is our main hope now.
Candy: She's only a little doggy! There's nothing she can do.
Adrian: Snow White is a she? I thought she was a he.
Candy: No, he's a she. I mean, she's a she. She's a bitch, is what I'm saying.
Xiaoqiang: Hey, that's my dog you're talking about!
Candy: I mean bitch in the technical sense, not like Mrs Hill.
Adrian: All this aside, what are we going to do?
Xiaoqiang: We could try and lure the guard inside, I suppose.
Candy: I think they're a bit more professional than that. Saka, you're the most experienced of any of us at dealing with … this kind of thing.
Saka: I am. But I must be blunt here, the presence of so many of you hinders us. Sanjay and I might be able to escape, though I fear taking him into the water.
Candy: Well, isn't that a bitch?
Xiaoqiang: Stop talking about Snow White like that!
Candy: No, idiot, I mean the situation we're stuck in. We've found ourselves an invulnerable ninja bodyguard, and he can't help us.
Saka: Ninja are Japanese. I am Indian.
Candy: I meant ninja like – oh, you know. Never mind.
Saka: I am confused. Have you ever seen me in black pajamas?
Candy: OK, what's the Indian for ninja?
Adrian: Are we going to spend all day asking stupid questions, or are we going to come up with an escape plan?
Sanjay: Don't worry. Snow White will come through for us. She is a clever girl.
Adrian: Sanjay, I know you're an immortal prince from another world and everything, so you may not have grasped this, but Candy's right. She's still only a dog. She's not going to find policemen and be able to tell them that we're trapped, or anything like that. Don't get your hopes up. We need to think about how to get out of this ourselves.
Candy: Damn William! If it wasn't for that traitor, we wouldn't be in this jam.
Xiaoqiang: No point with recriminations now. And I can understand him – just about – you know how it is with family.
Candy: He could have given us some kind of clue. Anything, really. Just to tip us off.
Xiaoqiang: Whatever. Let's deal with the problem at hand. Now, I reckon our best chance is when they move us to the boat – they're bound to be distracted, and all we need is for someone to get away and alert the authorities.
Candy: How do we know they haven't paid the local police off?
Xiaoqiang: Damnit. I guess it's all of us or none.
Suddenly they hear a wail from outside.
Sanjay: Who was that?
Saka: I believe it was the woman, Mrs Hill.
Xiaoqiang: Is she hurt?
Candy: I hope she's hurt.
Sanjay: Ms. Candy, I don't think we should rejoice in the pain of others. Even our enemies.
Xiaoqiang: Well, Sanjay, you do that, but I wouldn't be sorry if that witch fell down a well and died.
Adrian: That sounded like grief, not pain.
Candy: I wonder what's happened.
Suddenly the door bursts open and Mrs Hill stands there, her face streaked with tears.
Mrs Hill: You! You killed my husband! You and that stupid dog!
Xiaoqiang: What do you mean we killed your husband? What happened to him? We've been in here the whole time.
Mrs Hill: He was chasing that – that animal of yours. The little bitch –
Adrian: I don't think she's using it in the technical sense.
Mrs Hill: He had her cornered, and then – she bit him, and he was bleeding, and chasing after her. She – was running down a hill – and he tripped – he was limping from the bite – just as one of our men fired at that scrawny mutt.
Xiaoqiang: So your husband caught a bullet meant for my dog?
Mrs Hill: That's right! She killed him! That damn animal – and all of you, you killed him.
Xiaoqiang: I'm finding it hard to feel sympathy here, given that you kidnapped us and were trying to kill her …
Candy: You know, she is a clever dog.
Mrs Hill: Shut up! Shut up, all of you! You'll be smiling out of the other side of your faces when I'm done with you! Once she's done with you!
Adrian: She?
Mrs Hill: Our mistress, Serafima. She'll deal with you all! She'll get revenge for my Archibald!
Xiaoqiang: Archibald. Wow. No wonder he didn't use his first name.
Mrs Hill: Stop it! Stop your laughing! I'll kill you all, and your little dog too! We've scattered poison all over this island.
She slams the door.
Candy: Saka, what do you think? You were rather quiet before.
Saka: I had nothing of importance to say. One of our foes is dead, this is good. We are still in the captivity of our enemies.
Candy: What about an escape?
Saka: When they are taking us to the boat, this will be the best chance. But I must think…
Some hours later …
Xiaoqiang: Can you hear that?
Candy: Mmmmffffhhh? I was sleeping …
Xiaoqiang: A scratching – in the corner there.
Sanjay: There's a hole! A little tunnel!
Saka: Big enough to fit a man?
Candy: No – but – look – big enough for a little dog.
Snow White pops her head out of the tunnel.
Snow White: Woof!
Xiaoqiang: Snow White!
He throws his arms around her.
Saka: A heroic dog. But she is not well.
Candy: You're right. Look at her – she's eaten something bad.
Xiaoqiang: The poison! When I get my hands on that woman, I'll …
Saka: Let's deal with practical matter now. We must hide Snow White, if they return, and we should make our escape plan soon. I have begun to work out the details. Now, did any of you think to hide a coiled length of steel wire in your rectums?
They stare at him blankly.
Saka: Fortunately, I did. Now, I will require some privacy for a few minutes …
The door opens, revealing William on his own.
William: Quick, all of you!
Candy: What? Do you think we'll trust you again?
Xiaoqiang: How much worse a situation can we be in, woman? Move!
William: This way! I found a speedboat – quickly, before more guards come. I drugged the others.
Adrian: William, mate …
William: This is too little, too late, I know. But it's the least I can do. But please – if I don't make it through this – find my daughter. Before they do. Her name is Harriet; shes at St Margaret's School in Devon … she's fifteen. Please. You can't let them hurt her.
Xiaoqiang: We will. Now, move!
Saka: One moment, my wire …
Sanjay: Saka, come!
Saka: Ah, there it …. is.
Candy: Oh my god, that's genuinely disgusting. Do you keep it there all the time?
Saka: You never know when a length of coiled wire will come in handy.
William: Come on!
They run out of the building, along the beach.
William: I managed to get some time to myself earlier, and I mixed up a little something I learnt about when I was investigating the Amazon, using some of the local plants – the guards won't be waking up for a while.
Candy: This doesn't get you off the hook for earlier.
William: I know, I know – my friends, can you ever forgive me?
Candy: We'll see. Now where's this speedboat of yours?
William: Just down there. I put a map in it, and fuel, and all the food I could find - I'm afraid it's mostly instant noodles and energy bars from the store. Can somebody steer it? It's simple enough, just a regular boat. I think.
Saka: I am trained in small watercraft.
Candy: Of course you are …
William: We'll have to be quick – they have boats too. Quick and silent! Everybody onto the boat!
Guards appear out of the darkness.
William: Shit, they've found us! They must have seen the bodies.
Xiaoqiang: Into the boat, now! Let's go! Everybody pile in!Sanjay, do you have Snow White?
Sanjay: Yes, she is here.
William: Get going! I'll … arrrgh!
A bullet catches him in the chest and he falls to the ground.
William: Go – go … too late …
He falls silent.
Xiaoqiang: Saka, grab him!
Saka: There's no time! Start the engine!
They power up the engine and zoom into the darkness of the sea, leaving William's fallen body behind on the beach.
Notes:
1. this is certainly a fine mess we've gotten ourselves into.
2. I think they're a bit more professional than that.
3. come up with
Occasionally we have come up with some moneymaking ideas.
He couldn't come up with the answer.
4. come through
“Come through”的意思是“to continue to live, be strong, or succeed after a difficult or dangerous time”,同義詞為“survive”。
例句:If he comes through the operation OK he should be back to normal within a month.
5. Don't get your hopes up.
“Get somebody's hopes up”意思是“to make someone think that what they want is going to happen”,因此這句話在這里就是說“不要抱什么希望”。
例句:If we can't afford the trip then we shouldn't get the children's hopes up.
6. rejoice in
“Rejoice in/at/over”是書面語,意為“to feel or show that you are very happy”。
例句:We rejoiced in our good fortune.
7. scrawny
I met a scrawny kid in jeans and a T-shirt last night.
8. You'll be smiling out of the other side of your faces when I'm done with you!
9. pop out of
意為“to come suddenly or unexpectedly out of or away from something”,即“從某處突然出來”。
例句:The ball popped out of Smith's hands and onto the ground.
10. get /lay sb's hands on sth
意為“obtain sth that sb wants or needs very much”,即“把……
Do you know where I can get may hands on a Russian dictionary? I need to check a translation.
11. This doesn't get you off the hook for earlier.
“Let/get somebody off the hook”意為“to allow someone or help someone to get out of a difficult situation”。
12. pile in
“If people pile in, they get into a vehicle very quickly”,因此“pile in”就是“迅速上車”。
例句:Pierre came to pick them up, and they all piled in.
EPISODE 11: Adrift!
The party is escaping from Easter Island, where they were held captive by the Hills.Deep in the ocean, they run into a problem, as the engine sputters and dies.
Xiaoqiang: Well, that's the last of the fuel. Damnit.
Candy: I can't believe we couldn't make it somewhere safer.
Xiaoqiang: With those thugs chasing us in the other boats? We're just lucky we got away from them.
Candy: And now here we are, stuck in the ocean, without a clue where we're going.
Adrian: Don't panic, now.I can read the stars pretty well, and that'll let us get an initial fix on our location, and we have the map William left.We can't have gone that far from Easter Island, either.
Candy: And just how exactly are we going to move this boat?
Adrian: We wait till we're close to land, and then we take the dinghy.
Candy: The dinghy?
Adrian: There's an inflatable one here.We can paddle it, whereas we'd never shift this boat with muscle power.Too heavy.
Candy: Can all of us fit in the dinghy?
Adrian: Just about, if we balance out right. Fortunately Sanjay's small and light.
Sanjay: What about Snow White? She threw up again last night, and she looks so weak.
Adrian: I've examined her, and she puked up most of the poison, I'm pleased to say, but it's still working through her system. If we can find an island, there are local plants that I can use to purge her.She won't be strong for a few days, but she'll be fine if I get a chance to do some botanizing.
Candy: I'm looking at the map now – where do you think we are?
Adrian: From the observations Saka and I made last night, I'd say we're … here.
Candy: There seem to be a group of islands nearby.
Xiaoqiang: I wish we had a pair of binoculars.
Saka: Let us wait a few hours. My hope is that the tide will bring us closer. And we have enough food and water … for the moment.
They drift further.
Sanjay: I see land!Land!
Xiaoqiang: You've got good eyes, Sanjay.Where?There – oh, I see.An island!
Candy: Fantastic!God, I hope there's people there.I can't wait to get back to civilization.
Xiaoqiang: Hey, we all turned our eyes when you had to go …
Candy: That doesn't make squatting over the side any more dignified. And there's no toilet paper on this damn boat.
Saka: I doubt that William had time to include it.
Sanjay: Poor Mr William …
Adrian: We don't know he's dead, Sanjay. They may have rescued him. It's not like Serafima to give up a potential asset so easily. But – we need to get to his daughter as soon as we can, or at least word to her to get somewhere safe.
Sanjay: Will she believe us?We are strangers to her.
Xiaoqiang: We'll do what we can.But right now we need to watch out for ourselves! You think we're close enough to risk launching the dinghy? We can't take anywhere near as much food and water on it, weight-wise.
Saka: In thirty minutes or so.Otherwise the tide, by my estimations, will take us further away.
Candy: Right, let's get to blowing this thing up.
Sanjay: We are to explode it?But it is our only way to the island.
Candy: I mean inflate it, Sanjay.
Sanjay: Ooohhh.English can be a very confusing language.
Xiaoqiang: You know, Sanjay, you've never told us how you learnt such good English.
Sanjay: My school – it was founded by nuns.English nuns.So it was always our classroom language, though in the playground we spoke Hindi.
Xiaoqiang: OK.Let's get blowing.Saka, you look like you've got powerful lungs …
Some time later, as they paddle the dinghy to the beach.
Sanjay: Here at last!
Adrian: Thank Christ.I'm bloody exhausted from all that rowing.
Candy: God, it's good to feel solid land under my feet again.I was feeling so sick.
Saka: I shall bring the food on shore.
Candy: Can you see any sign of habitation?
Saka: I am afraid not.And this is a small island – I fear there is nobody here.
Candy: Wonderful!Just wonderful!A deserted island in the middle of the ocean! This is just perfect!
Xiaoqiang: Somebody will find us.There have to be other ships along this route.
Sanjay: We have some flares from the dinghy. We can set them off if we see someone.Let us hope.
Saka: For the minute, we should concentrate on survival.
Candy: Adrian, we need to look after Snow White.
Adrian: I'm on it.I'll look for the herbs, and see if I can find any sign of people here.
Candy: We should make a shelter. We need shade, and somewhere safe to sleep. There could be wild animals here.
Saka: There was a gun in the boat.I will go hunting.Small game, maybe, but enough to stock our pots.Fresh water is the main thing. We should look for a spring, a pool, anything clean.Watch for somewhere where animals drink from; that will be safer.
Candy: You seem very … certain. You've done this before, havent you?
Saka: No.
Candy: But you –
Saka: I have spent most of my life in cities. But on an assignment once, in Lahore, I was stuck in a hotel room for two weeks and the only thing on that mother-blasted hotel channel that was not pornography or the infantile entertainments of Hollywood was Ray Mears Extreme Survival.
Candy: Oh.
Saka: But I am a very good shot, and I know how to skin and cook a beast. Thanks to Mr Mears.
Xiaoqiang: Then let's do this.Adrian, you get the herbs.Candy and I will start building some kind of shelter. We've got the tarpaulin, we can work with that.Sanjay, have a scout for fresh water.Don't go far, keep within shouting distance.
That evening, they gather around the makeshift tent, cooking over the fire.
Candy: What is this meat?
Saka: A small deer.He was peaceful.I don't think he'd even seen a human before.I was able to come close to him. Then I broke his neck.
Candy: Oh!The poor little thing.
Xiaoqiang: Well, it's a shame for the deer, but he has cooked up nicely for us.And these spices are delicious.
Adrian: I gathered a little extra while I was looking for the medicinal plants I needed for Snow White.
Sanjay: And she says thank you.She didn't like being purged, but she feels much better now.Though she is weak.We should give me more of the stew. And water.
Xiaoqiang: I gathered as much as I could in the containers from the stream you found.I have to say it's good.It really – it tastes natural.Clean.
Candy: Clean. That's a word I feel like I'm not going to hear again.
Xiaoqiang: We can wash our clothes in the stream.
Candy: I'll be doing that. You better not peep.
Xiaoqiang: I promise.
Adrian: Well, we should get to sleep.Who's taking first watch?
Candy: Watch?
Adrian: One of us needs to keep an eye out for ships during the night. We can leave the fire burning on the beach, but there's always the chance of a liner or something passing at a distance. We can't risk missing it.
Candy: Oh, yes. That's a good idea. But how will we see it in the dark?
Adrian: Ships have lights.
Candy: God.I blame the lack of a change of panties for my idiocy.OK, who's on first watch?Say two hours each?
Saka: I need less sleep than most of you. I can take a double shift. But now … I must admit, I am tired.
Candy: Let's play rock-paper-scissors for it.
They play, Xiaoqiang loses.
Xiaoqiang: OK.I'll wake Adrian up in two hours for the next watch. The rest of you better turn in.Sleep well …
The next morning, they set out to explore the island further.
Candy: You know, if it wasn't for, well, the lack of bathrooms or clean clothes or a guaranteed meal or electricity … this wouldn't be a bad vacation.
Xiaoqiang: It is a desert island, I suppose. And the weather is beautiful.Perhaps a romantic getaway …
Candy: Yes, a lovely holiday … chased by psychopathic alien Russians, without any certainty of rescue …
Xiaoqiang: I've had worse family trips.
Candy: God, what kind of vacations did you take as a child?
Xiaoqiang: We went to stay with my uncle on Hainan. With my super-bratty cousins.Trust me, a deserted island is paradise compared to that.
Candy: It is beautiful.Look at those trees – the plants – the birds, in all those colors – the sand – wait, what's that?
Xiaoqiang: What's what?
Candy: Footprints. There, in the sand, down on that beach.
Xiaoqiang: Must be Saka.
Candy: They're much too small for him.And none of the rest of us have been out that far.
Xiaoqiang: My god – we're not alone on this island! But who could it be?
Notes:
1. without a clue
還可以說成“not have a clue”,就是“不知道;毫無頭緒”的意思。
例句:Until I arrived here, I hadn't got a clue what I was going to say to her.
2. just about
This job is just about done.
That's just about the limit!
3. blow up
Can you blow up these balloons?
Which bridge did they blow up?
4. weight-wise
“Weight-wise”意為“with regard to weight”,或者“ thinking about weight”,其中“wise”是“with regard to”的意思。
Weight-wise, we're carrying a lot, but not in terms of volume.
5. bloody
What a bloody waste of time!
6. concentrate on sth
“Concentrate on sth”意為“集中在、專心于”,應(yīng)與“concentrate sth on sth”區(qū)分開,后者是“集中……在……
例句:This firm concentrates on the European market.
We must concentrate our efforts on improving education.
7. I'm on it.
“Be on it”是 美國口語,意為“準(zhǔn)備就緒;決定動(dòng)手做”,因此這句話就是“我現(xiàn)在就著手去做?!?/p>
8. have a scout for
“Scout”在這里是名詞,還可以做動(dòng)詞,如:scout around/about (for sb/sth)。
例句:I've been scouting around town for a better house.
We'd better start scouting for a new secretary.
9. take a double shift
“值夜班”便可以說“take the night shift”,“輪流值班”便是“working in shifts”。
10. turn in
I turned in early last night. 癟urn in”要與“in turn”區(qū)分開,后者意為“輪流”。如果表示輪流放哨,可以說“You will be on watch in turn.”
11. super-bratty
