Another girl fell victim to honor killing in Kahta, a town in the south-east of Turkey. Medine Memi, 16, was buried alive in the garden of her family, according to a post-mortem examination which found her hands tied be-hind her back and her lungs and stomach filled with large amounts of soil. When girls or women are deemed to have stained the family honor, by behavior as innocent as simply talking to boys, there is strong peer pressure from the community on the male mem-bers of the family to restore their honor. The only way allowed bytheir code is to kill the girl or woman. At least 60 women are killed in honor killings in Turkey each year.
