In 1989， an 8.2 earthquake almost flattened (鏟平)America， killing over 30，000 people in less than four minutes. In the utter (徹底的) devastation (破壞) and chaos (混亂)， a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be， only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake (烙餅).

1989年，一次8.2級(jí)的地震幾乎鏟平美國(guó)，在短短不到4分鐘的時(shí)間里，奪去了3萬(wàn)多人的生命！在徹底的破壞與混亂之中，有位父親將他的妻子在家里安頓好后，跑到他兒子就讀的學(xué)校，目睹的卻是被夷為平地的校園。

After the unforgettably initial shock， he remembered the promise he had made to his son， “No matter what happens， I’ll always be there with you!” As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school， it looked hopeless， but he kept remembering his promise to his son.

一開(kāi)始他感到無(wú)比震驚，接著他想起了曾經(jīng)對(duì)兒子所作的承諾：“不論發(fā)生什么事，我都會(huì)在你身邊。”目睹曾經(jīng)的學(xué)校成為了一堆瓦礫，真叫人絕望。但父親的腦中仍然牢記著他對(duì)兒子的諾言。

He began to recall the way where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building， he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.

他開(kāi)始努力回憶每天早上送兒子上學(xué)的必經(jīng)之路，終于記起兒子的教室應(yīng)該就在那幢建筑物后面右邊的角落里，他跑到那兒，開(kāi)始在碎石礫中挖掘，搜尋兒子的下落。

As he was digging， other well-meaning people tried to ask him to leave the school， saying: “It’s too late!” “You can’t help! Go home!” “Come on， face reality. There’s nothing you can do!”

當(dāng)這位父親正在挖掘時(shí)，一些好心人試圖勸這位父親離開(kāi)現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，告訴他：“一切都太遲了！”“這樣做沒(méi)用，回去吧?！薄八懔税?，面對(duì)現(xiàn)實(shí)，你幫不上什么忙”。

To each person he responded (回答) with one line， “Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig for his son， stone by stone. The fire chief showed up and tried to pull him off the ruins， saying， “Fires are breaking out， and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home.” To which this loving， caring American father asked， “Are you going to help me now?”

面對(duì)其他人的勸告，這位父親的回答只有一句話：“你們?cè)敢鈳臀覇?？”然后繼續(xù)挖掘，一塊石頭接一塊石頭地挖著。消防隊(duì)長(zhǎng)出現(xiàn)了，他也試圖把這位父親從廢墟旁拉走，對(duì)他說(shuō)：“火災(zāi)頻現(xiàn)，四處都在發(fā)生爆炸，你在這里太危險(xiǎn)了，這邊的事我們會(huì)處理，你回家吧！”對(duì)此，這位慈愛(ài)、關(guān)切的美國(guó)父親仍然回答：“你們要幫我嗎？”

The police came and said， “You’re angry， anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!” To which he replied， “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped.

警察趕到現(xiàn)場(chǎng)，對(duì)他說(shuō)：“你現(xiàn)在又氣又急，一切都結(jié)束了，你在危及他人，回家吧！我們會(huì)處理一切的。”這位父親依舊回答：“你們?cè)敢鈳臀覇?？?然而，人們無(wú)動(dòng)于衷。

Courageously (鼓起勇氣地) he went on alone because he needed to know whether his son is alive or dead?” He dug for eight hours ... 12 hours ... 24 hours ... 36 hours ... then， in the 38th hour， he pulled back a large stone and heard his son’s voice. He screamed his son’s name， “Armand!” He heard back， “Dad? It’s me， Dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive， you’d save me and when you saved me， they would be saved. You promised， no matter what happens， you’ll always be there with me! You did it， Dad!”

為了弄清楚兒子是死是活，這位父親獨(dú)自一人鼓起勇氣，繼續(xù)進(jìn)行他的工作。他挖掘了8小時(shí)，12小時(shí)，24小時(shí)，36小時(shí)，38小時(shí)后，父親推開(kāi)了一塊巨大的石頭，聽(tīng)到了兒子的聲音。父親尖叫道：“阿曼德！”他聽(tīng)到兒子的回答：“爸爸？是我，爸爸！我告訴其他的小朋友不要著急。我告訴他們?nèi)绻钪?，就?huì)來(lái)救我的。如果我獲救了，他們也就獲救了。您答應(yīng)過(guò)我，不論發(fā)生什么，您永遠(yuǎn)都會(huì)在我身邊。您做到了，爸爸！”

“What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked. “There are 14 of us left out of 33， Dad. We’re scared， hungry， thirsty and thankful you’re here. When the building collapsed， it made a triangle， and it saved us.”

“你那里的情況怎樣？里邊究竟怎樣？”父親問(wèn)?！拔覀冇?3個(gè)，只有14個(gè)活著。爸爸，我們好害怕，又餓又渴，謝天謝地，您在這兒。教室倒塌時(shí)，剛好形成一個(gè)三角形空間，因此拯救了我們?！?/p>

“Come out， boy!”“No， Dad! Let the other kids out first， because I know you’ll get me! No matter what happens， I know you’ll always be there with me!”

“快出來(lái)吧！兒子！”“不，爸，讓其他小朋友先出來(lái)吧！因?yàn)槲抑滥鷷?huì)接我的！不管發(fā)生什么事，我知道您永遠(yuǎn)都會(huì)在我身邊！”
