It was said that the custom started in Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644). Before that no one hung “Happiness” upside down.
據(jù)說，明朝（公元1368-1644年）以前，老百姓門口的福字都是正的，倒著貼這個習(xí)俗是從明朝開始的。
The founding emperor Zhu Yuanzhang often went into the city disguised （化裝） as an ordinary citizen.
明朝的開國皇帝朱元璋經(jīng)常化裝成平民到民間調(diào)查。
One day， he heard a family criticizing him. Emperor Zhu got very angry and decided to kill the family on the night of New Year’s Eve. He turned the character “Happiness” on their door upside down to mark the house.
一天，他聽到一家人在聊天時說他的壞話，非常生氣，就把這家門上的福字倒過來作為記號，準(zhǔn)備在除夕晚上派人來把這家人殺光。
When Emperor Zhu got back to the palace， he was still angry. Then he told this to her wife Empress Ma.
回到皇宮后，朱元璋還是很生氣，于是告訴了他的妻子馬皇后。
Empress Ma was a kind-hearted person. In order to prevent a tragedy， she gave an order that every family should hang “Happiness” upside down on the door.
馬皇后是一個善良的人，為了避免這場災(zāi)難，她偷偷下令全城的人都把自己家門上的福字倒過來貼。
On the night of New Year’s Eve， the men sent by Emperor Zhu found that every family had hung “Happiness” upside down， and couldn’t find their target， Emperor Zhu was angry thinking the whole city was against him.
到了除夕晚上，朱元璋派出的人發(fā)現(xiàn)所有的福字都是倒著的，再也找不著那家人了。朱元璋發(fā)怒了，他以為全城的人都在和他作對。
Empress Ma told him， “It is every one’s wish that happiness will arrive in the New Year， People who hang ‘Happiness’ upside down are looking forward to receiving great future and success in their life.” She persuaded Emperor Zhu to listen to the people’s opinion with huminity.
馬皇后對朱元璋說：“老百姓故意把福字貼倒了，是希望福到，這是大吉大利意思啊。”然后又勸他應(yīng)該虛心接受意見。
Emperor Zhu accepted it and ordered people to hang “Happiness” upside down during Chinese New Year. When others see it， they will say， “Happiness has arrived!Happiness has arrived!”
朱元璋覺得有道理，就下令以后的福字都倒著貼。從此，過年的時候大家都會在門上貼著一個倒著的福字，別人看見了也會說：“福到了！福到了！”
