The story takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos， with a history of thousands of years. Three stories become interwoven ——

The main story chronicles a power struggle for the Iron Throne of Westeros after King Roberts death in the first book， A Game of Thrones. King Roberts son Joffrey immediately claims the throne with the support of his mothers powerful， immensely wealthy Lannister family. When Lord Eddard Stark， King Roberts “Hand” （chief advisor） finds out Joffrey was not sired by Robert， Roberts brothers Stannis and Renly individually lay claim to the throne. Meanwhile， several regions of Westeros seek to return to self-rule.

故事的第一條主線主要講述了在勞勃一世駕崩后，群雄并起爭(zhēng)奪鐵王座的故事：勞勃一世的長(zhǎng)子喬弗里在其母瑟曦王后的本家——蘭尼斯特家族的支持下繼承了王位，然而御前首相、艾德·史塔克公爵卻發(fā)現(xiàn)喬佛里并非勞勃所生，勞勃的二弟史坦尼斯公爵和幼弟藍(lán)禮也分別對(duì)王位發(fā)起了爭(zhēng)奪。與此同時(shí)，各個(gè)領(lǐng)地也都企圖重回自治。

The second story takes place on the northern border of Westeros， where an enormous， eight thousand year-old wall of ice defends Westeros from the Others. The Walls sentinels， the Sworn Brotherhood of the Nights Watch， are spending most of their time dealing with the human wildlings living beyond the Wall when the first Others appear. This story becomes entangled with the civil war to the south when Stannis moves to the Wall to protect the realm from the threat of invasion and simultaneously win the favor of the northern strongholds.

故事的第二條主線發(fā)生在寒冷的北境，這里有一條巨大的、有著8000年歷史的冰墻一直在保護(hù)維斯特洛不被異鬼傷害。在這里有一群稱為“守夜人”的守衛(wèi)，自從異鬼第一次出現(xiàn)后，他們就世代看守著著這座城墻并抵御野人。史坦尼斯來到長(zhǎng)城并在侵略中保衛(wèi)了領(lǐng)地，同時(shí)贏得了北方的支持，于是這條主線也卷入了戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)。

The third story is set on a huge eastern continent named Essos and follows the adventures of Daenerys Targaryen， the last known scion of House Targaryen. Living in exile on Essos， Daeneryss adventures show her growing ability as she rises from a pauper sold into an arranged marriage， to a powerful and canny ruler. Her rise is aided by the birth of three dragons from fossilized dragon eggs given to her as wedding gifts.Though her story is separated from the others by many thousands of miles， her stated goal is to reclaim the Iron Throne.

故事的第三條主線發(fā)生在狹海對(duì)岸，廣袤的東方大陸——厄索斯，主角是坦格利安家族唯一幸存的公主丹妮莉絲·坦格利安。流亡在厄索斯的丹尼莉絲從一個(gè)被賣掉的貧民上升到一位精明的統(tǒng)治者，這一切顯示出她越來越強(qiáng)的能力。這一系列上升得益于三只龍——由她在婚禮上得到的三只龍蛋化石孵化而出。雖然她的故事遠(yuǎn)在千里之外，她的目標(biāo)卻是重新奪回鐵王座。
