閱讀理解

When you speak, write a letter or make a telephone call, your words carry a message. Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows that you want to say something or ask a question. You shake or nod your head, and people know your meaning.

Other things can also carry messages. For example, the road sign “P” helps people know where to park their car. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on the door tell you which to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawing to tell about beautiful mountains, about blue sea and so on. Books are written to tell about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas.

Books, magazines, TV, radio and films all help us communicate with others. They all help us know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

閱讀表達(閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。)

“If you want to find something new, you have to go to a place nobody has been to before,” says Jean Michel Lemaire. “You have to open your eyes .

Lemaire is a retired mathematician from France with a passion for beetles (甲蟲). In the last few years, Lemaire has found seven new species. He has hunted them down by exploring caves and crawling through tunnels dating back to the Middle Ages. It was in one such tunnel in Monaco that he found his most valuable discovery—a blind soil-dwelling (居?。?beetle which is only 2mm long. Lemaire thinks it probably lives nowhere else on earth but the Rock of Monaco. “Finding a new species is like the holy grail (圣杯).” he says.

Already about 350,000 beetle species have been identified, making it one of the biggest animal orders on the planet. It is hard work—crawling around; underground, however, Lemaire points out that beetles are at least easier to catch than some other creatures, for example, butterflies.

For centuries, scientists have catalogued the creatures Europe—the tall and the small, the feathered and the furred. After all, Europe was home to some of the most respected naturalists, including Britains Charles Darwin and Swedens Carl Linnaeus, the biologist who popularized the Latin naming system for every species on Earth. And yet “we only know the tip of the iceberg,” says ecologist Benoit Fontaine of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. In Europe alone, about 700 new bug (昆蟲) species are being discovered each year. Thats about four times the rate of two hundred years ago.

1. What should you do if you want to find something new according to Lemaire? (within 11 words)

2. What did Lemaire study before he retired? (1 word)

3. How did Lemaire discover the blind beetle? (within 5 words)

4. Who had popularized the Latin naming system? (within 2 words)

5. How many new bug species were discovered in Europe every year two centuries ago? (within 2 words)

閱讀理解

Exchange a glance (一瞥) with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for three seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a persons gaze without being intimate (親密的), rude, or aggressive.

If you are on the elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you usually do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to look at them up and down and to assure them that you mean no threat. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of communication. You need to give a signal telling others that you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman (1963) calls “a dimming of the lights”. You look down at the floor, at the lights, or anywhere but into another passengers eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator? You will make the other people rather uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than three seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For example, a man and a woman communicate in this manner. They usually gaze at each other for about three seconds a time, and then drop their eyes down for three seconds before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a three-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you, and I am interested in you.” This type of stare often produces unfriendly feelings.

1. It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that ___ .

A. every glance has its important meaning

B. staring at a person is an expression of interest

C. a glance contains more meanings than words do

D. a gaze longer than three seconds is unacceptable

2. If you want to be left alone on an elevator, the best thing to do is to ___ .

A. look into another passengers eyes

B. keep a distance from other passengers

C. avoid eye contact with other passengers

D. signal that you are not a threat to anyone

3. What does the underlined phrase mean?

A. Closing ones eyes.

B. Reducing gaze-time.

C. Turning off the lights.

D. Stopping glancing at others.

4. Whats the main idea of the passage?

A. The limitations of eye contact.

B. Proper behaviors in our daily life.

C. The role of eye contact in communication.

D. The exchange of ideas through eye contact.
