Sex-the ultimate health supplement
Based on my Doctoral Dissertation, the Anti-Aging and Health Benefits of Sex, my research has shown that having more sex can help people look & feel 10 years younger; can help keep relationships young; can help people live longer, be healthier, have more energy and be happier.
Sex - reduces risk of Prostate Cancer
Research has shown that men who had an average of 4 or more ejaculations per week during their 20s, 30s and 40s had a significantly lower risk of developing prostate cancer (Giles, et al, 2003). Another study by Leitzmann, et al (2004), found that at least 21 ejaculations per month related to a decreased risk of prostate cancer. Schuman (1987), referred to in Stuart Brodys book Sex at Risk, found that men who had intercourse more than 3,000 times in their lives had half the risk of prostate cancer than those that did not.
Sex - reduces risk of Breast Cancer
Increased oxytocin produced during sex can be preventative in the development of breast cancer, according to Murell (1995). Nuns, on the other hand, have very high rates of breast cancer (Fraunmeni, 1969). And according to the research of Lê, et al (1989), women with infrequent or no sex had 3 times the breast cancer risk. Rossing (1996), found that women whose men who used condoms or withdrawal, and women not engaging in intercourse at all, had a breast cancer rate 5 times higher.
Sex - Good for Cardiovascular Health
A study by Abramov (1972-1975), of 100 Isreali women, aged between 40-60, who had heart attacks showed a statistically significant correlation between lack of sexual interest and heart attack - 65% of those with coronary history showed complete lack of sexual interest.
Bohlen, et al (2004), compared the exercise value of men engaged in: masturbation, masturbation by a partner, and two intercourse positions (man on top and woman on top). Their results showed that the two intercourse positions produced greater duration of heart rate elevation and substantially greater oxygen uptake at orgasm than the other activities.
Sex-Helps with Pain Relief
Ellison, in her book Womens Sexualities (2000), reported masturbation may help reduce menstrual cramps.
And a study by Couch & Bearss (1990) showed relief from headaches and migraines with sexual intercourse. 70% of the 82 women in their study reported having had sex during at least 1 migraine attack, and approximately half (47%) experienced at least some relief from the headache following sex and 17.5% reported complete relief from the headache.
Sex - Helps Maintain Vaginal & Pelvic Function
Sex can also help maintain vaginal and pelvic function, according to Levin (2003). The presence of semen in the vagina after ejaculation helps to maintain vaginal oxygenation and blood flow. Using condoms, it was noted, deprives women of many of the health benefits, including those blood flow and oxygenation benefits.
Sex - Benefits Musculoskeletal Structure
A study by Nicholas et al (2008), examined the association of general everyday body movement with history of vaginal orgasm by asking healthy young Belgian women to be videotaped walking on the street.
Their vaginal orgasmic status was judged by trained sexologists blind to their history. The gait of the vaginally orgasmic women was characterized by being physiologically normal, and manifested fluidity, energy, sensuality, and freedom.
Sex - Good for Better Sleep & Stress Relief
Orgasms have a sedative effect (Odent,1999) which is quite well known amongst men, but a study by Ellison (2000) showed that 32% of the 1,866 American women who reported masturbating in the previous three months did so to help them fall asleep.
Oxytocin, generated whilst making love, is also said to be responsible for the reduction of stress (Charnetski & Brennan, 2001).
Sex-Great Anti-Depressant
In a large representative sample of the Swedish population frequency of sex was a significant predictor of both mens and womens greater satisfaction with their mental health (Brody/Costa, 2009).
Another study of young women in the United States found that depression worsened with longer time periods between having sex, and the use of condoms obliterated the apparent antidepressant effects (Gallup & Burch, 2002).
Sex-Good for Hot Flashes
A 2007 study of Nigerian women, aged between 50-55 years, who experienced hot flushes associated with menopausal symptoms, showed that sex at least once weekly lessens the frequency of hot flushes (Akinwale, 2007).
Sex-Helps Balance Hormones
Dr. Sara Gottfried, who wrote The Hormone Cure (2013) says, "Modern women face an unacknowledged epidemic of hormonal imbalance. Unremitting stress, superwoman expectations, and misinformation about hormones have led to a full-blown crisis... Were told that its normal to feel fatigue, anxiety ridden, unsexy, fat and cranky. Thats not true. Its not normal."
"Female orgasm and sexual stimulation raise estradiol levels in women who are premenopausal.... regular sexual connection and orgasm stimulate the blood flow that helps massage, soften, and thicken the tissue of the outer (vulva) and inner (vagina) pleasure equipment. Orgasm raises oxytocin, which works with estrogen in the female body to buffer stress and lower cortisol, and help women feel more connected and loving."
Hormonal Imbalances caused by...
Hormonal imbalances can be caused by: diet; environmental toxins; birth control pills; anti-depressants; and skin care loaded with hormonal disruptors. Even hormonal testing kits even advise women to not use skin cream the night before they test themselves as it could upset their fine hormonal balance.
Diet - Important for Increasing Sexual Desire
Slim Sane and Sexy (Mead, J. and Lommen, 2009) authors suggest: eat regularly through out the day (every41/2 hours); eat a wide variety of foods, representing all the colors of the rainbow; avoid processed foods and refined white foods (such as baked goods made from white flour); minimize stress, slowdown, drink more water, exercise regularly, reduce soda pop, and alcohol.
Denie Hiestand, author of Electrical Nutrition (2001) says increase libido by eating a diet low in carbohydrates and high in available protein.
Sex-Helps you Look Younger
In a study of the Superyoung (Weeks & James, Superyoung, 1999), participants looked 10-12 years younger, felt younger, had more energy, were more resilient (were more able to bounce back from stressful, adverse life events), more adaptable (had the capacity to adjust to new situations), exercised regularly, and had a "robust sex life."
The authors state: "Improving the quality of ones sex life can help a person to look between four and seven years younger."
Sex-Helps you Live Longer
A study by Palmore (1982) followed 252 racially diverse people over a 25 year period, determined frequency of intercourse was a significant predictor of longevity for men. A Swedish study of 166 seventy-year-old men found that mortality was higher among men who had ceased having sexual intercourse at an earlier age (Persson, 1981).
And a study in the UK, by Davey Smith & Yarnell (1997) found the mortality risk was 50% lower among men who had frequent orgasms (two or more per week), than among men who had orgasms less than once a month.
Sex - Recommended Dose
Dr. Braverman (Younger (sexier) You: Look and Feel 15 Years Younger by Having the Best Sex of Your Life, 2011) says, "You need to have lots of sex to reverse aging and achieve optimal health."
His recommended Dose: Between 18-25 yrs = at least 1 time per day; between 25-30 yrs = once a day; between 30-40 yrs = 4 times per week; above 40 yrs = 3 times per week.
Sex-Important for Spiritual Health & Well-Being
In my own research I have found that it is essential to honor the energetic and spiritual aspects of our sexuality and sexual lives.
Mainstream medicine does not address the energetic and spiritual reality of human sexuality and related health issues.
Addressing this separation could well be the key to our longevity, and to greater sexual health and sexual satisfaction.
The Chakras - our Energy Centers
The first chakra is located at the base of the spine and is associated with survival. Element = Earth. The second chakra is located in the lower abdomen and is associated with emotions and sexuality. Element = Water. The third chakra is located in the solar plexus and is associated with personal power. Element = Fire. The fourth chakra is located over the sternum and is associated with love. Element = Air. The fifth chakra is located in the throat and is associated with communication. Element = Sound. The sixth chakra is located in the center of the forehead and is associated with clairvoyance and intuition. Element = Light. And the seventh chakra is located at the top of the head and is associated with knowledge and understanding. Element = Thought." (see Judiths book, Wheels of Life, 1995)
Sexual Energy of the Chakras
My research has shown the base chakra is usually associated with a primal sexual urge; the second chakra more with soft and sensual loving; the third chakra sexual energy is more fiery, igniting the passion within; and the fourth chakra is associated with the heart center, snuggling and cuddling.
The fifth chakra relates to communication, and sexually relates to our ability to talk and the noises we make (or do not make) when having sex. Sexually the sixth chakra is about connecting energetically and utilizing conscious breath, and the seventh chakra is all about energetic expansion.
Sexual Health Issues of the 1st Chakra
The developmental age frame of the 1st chakra is between 1-7 years.
When working with the base chakra, issues that may arise are experiences that occurred at birth, such as a difficult birth, or trauma around the birthing process or straight afterwards that can physically affect whether that energy center was compromised or allowed to fully develop.
If an individual had any issues surrounding their birth and early childhood survival quite often they may have core root sexual issues about being comfortable sexual beings, comfortable in their raw, primal sexual expression. They may have weak constitutions, not feel comfortable sexually, not be able to truly do well on the physical plane, in their jobs, be successful making money, or struggle having orgasms, or physically or sexually interacting with others.
Sexual Health Issues of the 2nd Chakra
The development stage of this particular energy center and subsequent sexual energy associated with this center is from 7-14 years.
This is the time when they body develops its sexual reproductive systems. If anything occurred to inhibit the development of this energy center during those formative years, then that could lead to reproductive system issues, bad period pains, cysts, pain during sex, lower back issues, fertility issues, and lower intestinal issues.
Compromise could have occurred due to some type of physical sexual abuse, or even just a physical accident such as being kicked in the testicles or landing on the bar of a bicycle. Or it could have been mentally/emotionally based such as having parents who yell and scream at their young children for being too energetic, bubbly or childlike.
Sexual Health Issues of the 3rd Chakra
The time frame of the development of the 3rd chakra is from 14-21 years.
If this center is compromised that may lead to issues with the kidneys or liver and result in skin issues such as acne, eczema or psoriasis, stomach issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, empowerment issues, feeling weak, victimized, attacked, not strong emotionally, with lowered self-esteem and self- confidence.
It is during these years that individuals either develop into fully empowered strong sexual beings or that energy center is compromised by events or experiences. All of these experiences can then trickle on into the individuals sexual lives - are they empowered, dominant type lovers or meek, submissive lovers?
Compromised Upper Chakras
If any of the lower chakras have been compromised then further developmental phases of the other chakras may also be affected.
The heart chakra may be compromised and affect the persons ability to connect deeply with a partner, their communication chakra may not develop properly and neither the intuitive upper chakras.
It is important to address any imbalances in the chakras in order to enable proper sexual development.
How to balance the chakras?
The chakras, or energy centers, can be balanced with tantric exercises; by visiting conscious sex workers; participating in sex surrogate partner therapy; having sexological bodywork; or achieving Soul Sex - consciously connecting the chakras through sex (see: Soul Sex by Pavitra, 2004).
Conclusions
Sex is good for you, good for your health, helps keep you and your relationships young and vibrant, and is a necessary part of human existence.
