I am the Sri Lankan Ambassador to China, and take this opportunity to convey to the Chinese public my best wishes through this popular periodical, China Today magazine. The role that China Today magazine enacts is that of a bridge promoting friendship among countries. I wish the magazine and everyone involved in its publication sustained success.

I liked the article “Global Online Purchasing Fever” in the February issue of your magazine. The anecdote about overseas Chinese living in Singapore rushing to buy Laoganma – a spicy but yummy chili sauce made in China – was an amusing observation. I know full well that this Chinese ingredient could hold its own in a competition with any world famous Indian curry sauce. The commodities that Internet retailer Alibaba made available once more on Chinese websites during last years November 11 online shopping bonanza, nicknamed the Double 11, or Singles Day Festival, attracted millions of overseas consumers. My friends and I are now planning to sell Chinese local specialties – such as Chinese wolfberry, Chinese cabbage, and wildflower honey, on the overseas market. Thanks to the convenience of the Internet, we can browse information and sell our commodities online. Customers may order simply by clicking the mouse, or even by using their smart phones while lying in bed.

I admired the photos in your special report “Life in Shangri-La.” I was surprised to learn that the Cizhong Church, built more than 100 years ago by French missionaries, still has a congregation. Cizhong is thus both a sacred place for Catholics and a tourist destination. A Catholic church in such a setting seems incongruous, but to local residents it is obviously as natural as their daily salt. What a pity that during my visit to Yunnan a few years ago I did not explore Shangri-La. I hope one day, before too long, to go there again.
