Research on the Application of Children’s Picture Book in English Teaching of the Junior Class in Primary School

Abstract: Childrens picture books is a kind of new form of childrens literature with pictures and words. For junior class, it has become a hot spot to put childrens picture book into English teaching in the research of second language acquisition. Based on the practice of junior classs English teaching, the study explores the educational value of the application of picture book in junior English teaching.

Key Words: Childrens Picture Book; Immersion Instruction

In recent years, some English teachers begin to pay close attention to childrens picture book. Childrens picture book, as a kind of proper material, offers opportunities to put the students into the real language environment: teachers and students communicate with each other in English, English words, English sentences, colorful pictures and so on. Immersion Instruction is a kind of effective teaching method in second language acquisition. The purpose of this paper is to explore suitable ways for English teachers who work in primary schools to make good use of childrens picture book in English teaching.

1 The Basic Introduction of Childrens Picture Book

Picture book is originated in Europe in the 17th century. In 1658, the Czech educator Comenius published Graphic in the World, which is considered one of the earliest illustrated book in the world. In the 1930s, America leads the art of picture book into the golden age. In Asia, the first trend of picture book was in Japan in the 1950s. In the 1970s, picture book was introduced into China, Taiwan. The arrival of the era of reading promotes the development of picture book in China. The special focus of childrens picture book is on the internal connection of words and pictures to achieve a balance. The words and pictures in childrens picture book make the perfect fusion to express the emotion and theme.

2 The Educational Value of Childrens Picture Book

There are vivid pictures and short words in childrens picture book which are easy to be accepted by junior school students. It is good for the children to broaden their horizon, enrich the experience of life, stimulate the creative thinking and cultivate the ability to enjoy beauty in reading childrens picture book. It is easy for children to use image, color and sound to know something new. The beautiful pictures in childrens picture book attracts childrens curiosity into colorful story. English teachers can offer meaningful questions to guide children to enjoy the language of the text and encourage children to express their ideas in simple English words or sentences according to their imagination.endprint

3 The English Teaching Practice of Childrens Picture Book

Childrens picture book can make the children fall into the wonderful story plot. It is easy for them to know the words, deepen understanding of the story and learn some useful knowledge in their lives. Immersion Instruction is a kind of effective teaching method in second language acquisition. The teaching method was born in Canada in the 1960s. The use of the method in China is to try teachers best to create English environment to lead the students into the English world. There are 14 pages in the children picture book Rosies Walk. The author is Pat Hutchins. Its clear colorful pictures and interesting words help to illustrate the hen and fox. Each picture of the book has a specific structure and meaning and children can see the different changes of the hen. There are eight sentences in the whole book and the words are all basic and easy words of everyday spoken English. Putting the students in the English environment by using of children picture book, Rosies Walk to make good use of Immersion Instruction of childrens picture book in English teaching is a good way to teach English.

4 Conclusion

Childrens picture book is one of the most suitable books for lower grade students of primary school to read. It is a new way to put the picture book into English teaching in recent years. Adhere to the principle of combing theory and practice, the study explores the educational value of the application of picture book in junior English teaching and offers guidance for English teachers who work in junior schools.
