Ive loved my mothers desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it. Mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair and looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the action of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “is for Elizabeth.”
I never saw her angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she just did it. But as a young girl, I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional (易感動(dòng)的)”. But she lived “on the surface (表面)”.
As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive (原諒) me.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing happened. I couldnt be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
But the present of her desk told me, as shed never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside—a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折疊) and refolded (再折疊) many times. It was my letter.
“In any way you chose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.”

People cant see you when youre speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So, the way you speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have found out that 80% of communication over the phone is through your tone (語氣) of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on how to speak over the phone.
1. Facial Expressions (面部表情)
Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example, if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite, if you have an angry look on your face, it can make you sound unpleasant.
2. Volume (音量)
If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly, itll be difficult to hear you. So, speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that youre shouting.
3. Pace
The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example, an angry person might speak faster. Or a sad person might speak very slowly. Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and itll make it easier for the other person to understand you.
4. Movement
If youre feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness (緊張) in your body and help your voice to sound more confident.
5. Pauses (停頓)
Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also, if you pause after giving some new information, itll give the other person time to understand it. At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speakers feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry, he might use pauses and says, “I...am...so...angry...”
( )66. _______ telephone communication is from the words you use.
A. 20% B. 40% C. 60% D. 80%
( )67. People can _______ to make themselves less nervous on the phone.
A. pause freely B. move around
C. raise their voices D. make facial expressions
( )68. When people talking on the phone pause, _______.
A. the speaker can show he is friendly
B. the speaker can tell more information
C. the listener will feel confident and in control
D. the listener will have time to understand the words
( )69. The passage is mainly about _______.
A. how to control the speed of your speech
B. different good ways of talking on the phone
C. reasons of making phone calls to your friends
D. how to improve communication among friends
( )70. What is the writers opinion about telephone talk?
