More and more
1. 表示“越來越多的”,用于修飾名詞。如:
1) More and more people are moving to the city.(越來越多人向城市搬遷。)
2) More and more money was spent on it.(在這上面花的錢越來越多。)
2. 表示“越來越……”,用于修飾形容詞、副詞、動詞、介詞短語等。如:
1) Its becoming more and more difficult to find a job.(找工作越來越困難了。)
2) Were going more and more slowly.(我們越走越慢了。)
3) I worry more and more every day.(我一天比一天擔心。)
注意:有時用的可能是普通的比較級形式。如:
1) The weather is getting colder and colder.(天氣越來越冷了。)
2) Debbie is growing fast. She keeps getting taller and taller.(戴比長得很快,個子越來越高。)
More or less
1. 表示“或多或少,在一定程度上,大體上”。如:
1) The jobs more or less finished.(這項工作差不多完成了。)
2) Ive more or less finished reading the book.
(我差不多已經(jīng)把這本書看完了。)
2. 表示“大約,左右”。如:
1) The repairs will cost $50, more or less.(修理費大約要50美元。)
2) It took more or less a whole day to paint the ceiling.
(粉刷天花板用了將近一整天的時間。)
3. 表示“一點也不”,用于否定句中。如:
1) I dont like it, more or less.(我一點也不喜歡。)
2) I didnt understand it, more or less.(我一點也不懂。)
More than
1. 表示“多于”,通常后接數(shù)詞。如:
1) Ive known him for more than 20 years.(我已認識他二十多年了。)
2) There were no more than a hundred people at the rally[集會].(大概不到一百人參加了集會。)
2. 表示“不只是,不僅僅是”,通常后接名詞、動詞、從句等。如:
1) His report is more than a survey.(他的報告不只是一份調(diào)查。)
2) The result was much more than I imagined.(結(jié)果遠遠超過我的想象。)
3. 表示“極其,非常”,通常后接形容詞、副詞或分詞等。如:
1) She was more than kind to us.(她對我們很友好。)
2) Im more than happy to take you there in my car.(我非常愿意載你過去。)
4. 表示“難以,完全不能”,其后通常連用情態(tài)動詞 can。如:
That is more than I can understand. =I cant understand that. (那事兒我無法理解。)
No more
1. 表示“也不”。如:
—I cannot understand this at all.(我根本不懂這個。)
—No more can I.(我也不懂。)
2. 表示“不能再多,沒有更多的”,表示數(shù)或程度。如:
1) I can eat no more.(我不能再吃了。)
2) I have no more to say.(我再沒有什么要說的了。)
3. 表示“不再”,表示時間。如:
Ill go there no more.(我再也不去那里了。)
No more…than
用于兩者比較,并且否定兩者,其意為“不……也不……,同……一樣不”。如:
1) Shes no more a great singer than I am.(我不是優(yōu)秀歌手,她也不是。)
2) Tom is no more rich than Jack is.(杰克不是有錢人,湯姆也不是。)
Whats more
用于引出更重要的信息,其意為“更重要的,更有甚者,而且”。如:
1) Hes dirty, and whats more he smells.(他很臟,身上還有味兒呢。)
2) They are going to get married, and whats more they are setting up in business together.(他們就要結(jié)婚了,而且還要一起做生意呢。)
