Keukenhof, Lisse, Netherlands

Although tulips are native to central Asia and were first grown in Persia and the Ottoman Empire, no country has cared more about tulip blooms than the Netherlands.

This simply named “kitchen garden” is a showcase for national growers[生長物], who provide seven million bulbs to create the world’s largest floral[花的] display. Purple crocus and hyacinths emerge[顯現(xiàn)] first, narcissi and daffodils add a trumpet[小號] fanfare[喇叭聲], then a symphony[交響曲] of tulips explodes in full bloom.

Royal Botanic Gardens, London, UK

“Kew Gardens” has been at the forefront[最前線] of botanical research since 1759, with the planet’s largest collection of living plants, plus a vast library of botanical drawings and books.

The huge gardens have wandering[蜿蜒的] walkways that lead past a pretty palette[調(diào)色板] of spring blooms, from crocus and daffodils along the Princess Walk to hyacinths and narcissi on the parterres[花壇] of the Palm House. Woodlands are sprinkled[使散布] with bluebells and snowdrops, and the Rhododendron Walk is lined with pink blossoms.

At any time of year, the gardens’ 19th-century greenhouses explode with exotic[外國的] blooms and collections of palm trees and ferns. Don’t miss the charming Marianne North Gallery, which features[以……為特色] 832 paintings of exotic flora[植物群] by a well-travelled Victorian.

Botanischer Garten, Berlin, Germany

Botanischer Garten is one of the world’s most famous botanic gardens. It started more than 300 years ago as a royal herb[草本植物] garden and is now owned by the Free University of Berlin.

Sixteen glasshouses house a variety of exotic species[種類] such as orchids, carnivorous plants, cacti and water lilies.

The Great Pavilion[大帳篷,亭], one of the world’s largest glasshouses and a soaring[高聳的] example of 19th-century steel-and-glass architecture[建筑], features a collection of towering[高聳的] bamboos.

Inside the Botanical Museum—the only museum in Europe purely devoted to botany—you can also study plants associated with[與……

Butchart Gardens, British Columbia, Canada

Butchart Gardens, 20 kilometres from Victoria on Vancouver Island, is a commercial[商業(yè)的] show garden rather than botanic garden, but don’t let that put you off—you could hardly find a better place for spring displays.

The gardens were opened in 1904 on the site of an old limestone[石灰石] quarry[采石場] by the wife of a cement[水泥] company owner, and the sunken garden is still the highlight—you can look down from viewpoints onto a sea of colour from tulips and daffodils.

Rose and Italianate[意大利風格的] gardens have since been added; unusual Himalayan blue poppies nod in springtime in the Japanese Garden, though, more interestingly, the maples put on a fiery[火紅的] display in autumn.

Beyond, a duck pond is surrounded by spring bulbs. The gardens cover 20 hectares, with 700 varieties of plants and around million flowers.

The colorful show is amazing, and gardeners will be inspired by the perfection of Butchart. Not a leaf seems out of place, lawns are cut to carpet-like perfection, and every bloom is flawless[

Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York, USA

New York Botanical Garden may seem the more obvious choice, but head to Brooklyn for America’s most-visited botanic gardens.

It’s a springtime treat[樂事], starting early at Magnolia Plaza—lovely white flowers of star magnolia in March, followed by ivory and pink beauties in April.

Bluebells erupt[爆發(fā)] in the woods, and the Cherry Esplanade[散步路] grows with its row of double-flowering[重瓣花] cherry trees. By the end of April, the Lilac Collection fills the air with perfumed scents in violet[紫羅蘭色] and magenta[洋紅色].

The Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden is at its finest in mid-April, and the centrepiece of a two-day cherry-blossom festival. Dotted with stone lanterns and graced[使更優(yōu)美] with a viewing pavilion, it blushes with cherry trees and azaleas. Turtles swim in the ponds.

Be sure to visit the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, which houses one of the world’s oldest and largest bonsai[盆景] collections, planted in ceramic[陶器的] pots and displayed at eye level.

Jardim Botanico, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Some of the world’s best botanic gardens lie in the tropics and lack regular spring-times. If you like your seasons hot and humid[濕潤的], however, this botanic garden is the one for you.

Located north of Ipanema and Leblon, the Jardim Botanico was founded in 1808 by Brazil’s prince regent[

While you won’t find the spring flowers of the northern hemisphere[北半球], there’s plenty to enjoy—the alley[小徑] of royal palms, wonderful ponds afloat with water lilies of Alice in Wonderland sizes, and hundreds of species of orchids and bromeliads. Locals often come here on weekends to walk around, eat and celebrate[慶祝] kids’ birthdays. Weekdays are quiet and relaxing.

The garden adjoins[毗連] a national park and has plenty of birdlife, which more than makes up for the lack of flowery[多花的] colour. You might find toucans[巨嘴鳥], seven-coloured tanagers[唐納雀] and yelloweared woodpeckers[啄木鳥].
