There is an old alley called Lingshi Alley in Yuzhong District, which stands at the southern end of Daqiangba and within the Tongyuanmen Gate. Now it is an old community decorated with grey bricks and Chinese wooden doors and windows, shaded by green trees. On the other side of the wall locates the former district government office on Heping Road, and within the office area remains the former site of German Consulate. It is an important diplomatic site in Chongqing and an excellent relic for researching the diplomatic history of the Republic of China and the history of Chongqing during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
The building bears the style of the period when Chongqing was opened as a port city. It is a two-storey building in brick-concrete structure, each floor having 7 rooms. The corridor on the first floor is of continuous curves while simple glass doors and windows decorate the corridor on the second floor. According to the data of Yuzhong district cultural administration office, the building has been named outstanding historical building in Chongqing and a cultural relic site in Yuzhong district.
In 1904, the German Consulate in Chongqing was officially opened in Wufu Palace. One vice consul is based in Chongqing to handle daily work, while another vice consul is based in Chengdu. After the World War I broke out, the German Consulate was closed. In May 1922, China and Germany reestablished diplomatic relations. In September 1938, the German embassy in China moved to Chongqing, and the consulate affairs in Chongqing were transferred to the embassy.
