Born in 1937 in Kunshan， Jiangsu Province， Qian Qihu， a professor at the Army Engineering University of the Peoples Liberation Army， is a well?known expert in the fields of civil defense engineering.

The tunnel， lying more than 60 meters underwater， opened to traffic in 2010， and it helped ease traffic congestion.

Despite his age， Qian is still in the front line of his research. He still teaches young engineers and serves as an adviser on major civil projects including the Hong Kong?Zhuhai?Macao Bridge， the longest sea crossing.
