Stargazy pie is a delicious pie filled with hard?boiled eggs, potatoes, bacon, mustard?flavored custard (蛋奶沙司), and whole sardines (沙丁魚) that are poking their heads through the pie, appearing to gaze at the stars, hence the name.
The unusual dish was originally prepared to celebrate the heroic fishermen's catches during the cold, stormy win?ters. The whole fish were baked into a pie and many be?lieve that it saved the Mousehole village of Cornwall from starvation. Although the arrangement of the fish seems highly strange, there's actually a good reason for their placement—the need to preserve as much of the essential oil as possible. Therefore, the fish are arranged so and their oil runs back into the filling(餡)as they are cooked.
There are fish heads and tails poking out of the pie, giving the image that fish are swimming through it.Eating a pie full of fish heads is not to everyone's taste, but it's a very special tradition for this little village in Britain. It can be traced back to one small fish?ing community in the 1500s.
In the past, each storm season was a threat to the entire region as people in the village would starve without the fresh catch. That was one December in the 16th century. An old fisherman named Tom Bawcock decided to find food for villagers and took his boat out.The villagers noticed his boat was gone, and they lit lanterns and candles to guide him back to safety. Luckily, Bawcock was successful with strong determination. He caught a full boat?load of seven types of fish. People welcomed him back and baked his entire catch into a massive fish pie. The fish heads and tails were arranged to poke out of the top of the pie to prove that there was indeed fish in it. Ever since that day, the local people celebrate Tom Bawcock's Eve on December 23 with stargazy pie.
You'll find variations of stargazy pie across England, but you are recommended to eat the authentic (真正的) dish in Mousehole on December 23 at the Ship Inn. That's where the tradition began.
