Her family as well had made plans in the event of a natural disaster. Earthquakes are so much more common on the West Coast of the United States.

Today Maggie was home alone. Maggie knew her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway, thinking about preparing supper for her dad. Maggies dad would arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.

Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. She was taking some biscuits from the kitchen cupboard. Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were frightening, and Maggie hid herself in fear.

After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement (地下室). And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve (閥門) was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.

Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was now almost unrecognizable. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.

While still on the steps she felt the water rising and rising. Suddenly Maggie felt a pain as a large wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconscious onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She was happy that she was still alive!

You cant always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesnt think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. Thats why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. "Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (傘篷) built into a street lamp," he said.

The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians (行人) shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, theres also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed (安裝) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

28. Why did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?

A. To predict a heavy rain.????? B. To check the weather forecast.

C. To protect people from the rain.?? D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

29. Which of the following shows the correct working steps of the Lampbrella?

A. motor→canopy→sensors????? B. sensors→motor→canopy

C. motor→sensors→canopy????? D. canopy→motor→sensors

30. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?

A. Its look.?? B. Its fitting.?? C. Its safety.?? D. Its moving speed.

31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph about the Lampbrella?

A. It would be put on show in Moscow.

B. It could be put into immediate production.

C. Its designer will open a company to sell his product.

D. Its designer is confident that his creation is practical.

Earthquake rescue (救援) robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say that with these robots, rescue workers will be able to have more time to save more lives during an earthquake.

This robot looking like a helicopter, is called the detector-bot. Its about 4 meters long, and it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions (作用) are to collect information from the air, and send goods of up to 30 kilos to people stuck in an earthquake.

This robot has a high-quality 360-degree panoramic camera. It can work day and night and will also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area. Dr Qi Juntong, from Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Science, said, “Unlike other automatic machines, the most important feature of this robot is that it doesnt need a distant control. We just set the information of the earthquake-struck area on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour.”

This robot has a different function—it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers are unable to go.

As well as a detector (探測(cè)器) that finds victims and detects poisonous gas, a camera is placed in the 40-centimeter-long robot, which can work well even in the dark to send clear pictures.

Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-meter-long pipe. People who are caught in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.

Experts have said that the robots will enter production, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team soon.

32. What is TRUE about the robot according to the text?

A. It weighs about 30 kilos.???? B. It is a 10-meter-long machine.

C. It is a machine carried by a helicopter. D. It sends supplies to the earthquake area.

33. Dr Qi Juntong thinks the robot is different mainly because?? .

A. it has more functions

B. it has a high-quality camera

C. it can change as the environment changes

D. it can work by himself once given the information

34. The underlined word “which” in Paragraph 5 refers to “? ”.

A. a camera?? B. a detector??? C. a rescuer??? D. a robot

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. A new kind of earthquake robot.?? B. The reason for making a special robot.

C. Some rescue tips after earthquakes.? D. Some information about earthquakes.
