Many of us have learned that chatting with a friend or family can improve ourmood. And failing to communicate with other people can also affect the health of ourminds and bodies. Now experts in the United States have found that a goodconversation just once a day could be enough to increase peoples happiness andlower their stress levels.
The researchers looked at seven types of conversation that past research hasfound to make people feel more bonded3. These included things like sharing jokes, listening to others opinions, discussing recent experiences, offering realcompliments4, showing care for others and so on.
The researchers asked over 900 people from five US universities to have oneof these seven types of conversation each day. The participants5 then reportedhow their chats affected their stress, well-being6 and other feelings that day.
The researchers also looked at how thenumber of daily chats affected theparticipantswell-being. And they found thatwhile one good chat was enough to improvesomeones mood, those who chose to havemore of these conversations had better days.
“This means the more that you listened to your friends, the more that youshowed care, the more that you took time to value othersopinions, the better youfelt at the end of the day,”the researcher said. The researchers also said thatmeeting for a chat was better for peoples well-being than using a phone orsocial media7.
