My name is Robinson Crusoe. I cannot say that for five years, any extraordinary thinghappened to me, but I lived on in the same place as before. Besides my yearly labour ofplanting my corn, and curing my raisins (葡萄干), of both which I always kept up justenough to have enough stock of one year’s supply beforehand, I had one labour, that is, tomake a canoe (獨木舟), which at last I finished.
By digging a canal (水渠) to it of six feet wide and four feet deep, I brought it into thewater, almost half a mile. As for the first canoe, it was so big. I made it without consideringbeforehand how I should be able to launch it, so, never being able to bring it into the water,or bring the water to it, I had to let it lie where it was as a to teach me to bewiser the next time. Indeed, the next time, though I could not get a tree proper for it, andwas in a place where I could not get the water to it at any less distance than, as I have said, near half a mile, yet, as I saw it was practicable at last, I never gave it up for anything.Though I had spent near two years on it, yet I never spared my labour, in the hope of havinga boat to go off to the sea at last.
As I had a boat, my next design was to travel round the island. I had been on the otherside in one place, crossing over the land, and the discoveries I made on that little journeymade me very eager to see other parts of the coast. Now that I had a boat, I thought of nothingbut sailing round the island.

In 17thcentury Europe, it was unheard of for a woman to travel by herself, but thatdidn’t stop Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1699, she and her 21yearolddaughter Dorotheasailed from Amsterdam to Surinam in South America. The threemonthvoyage was dangerous, but she was determined to go.
