I received a private message on Weibo. It began harmlessly enough, “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”
It was all becoming too much. Weibo was running my life, not me.
But what killed Weibo for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “l(fā)ikes” it had got. His question was a wake--up call.
“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval (贊成). I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.
Before Weibo, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction (消遣) and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.
To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Weibo account.
I’d been in the habit of checking Weibo many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me, and I started taking yoga classes. I do my best to be a good mother, and my son is happy and healthy.
I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.
The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.
After a few weeks, I returned to Weibo. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly (始終) to post updates.
It is not an addiction any more.

C. She developed some healthy habits. D. She traveled around for a year.
27. What was the change of the author’s life on social media?
A. She collected photos of her friends’ kids. B. She kept in touch with her family more.
C. She posted her daily updates more. D. She texted her friends frequently.

What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else? I believe personal success could be anything at all—it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or an unnoticed person, who has led a simple, quiet and happy life? The simplest definition (定義) of success, I think, is “to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it”.
The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever effort you choose may be the goal of life, because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?
Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated (成為……的動(dòng)機(jī)) to a great extent by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to with their lives? By the way, the ability to imagine makes us different from animals.
Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe you are successful. Just being a slightly better person each day for me is success. I’ve got a very long way to go then!
Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It’s the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.
28. What is personal success according to the author?
A. Winning public recognition. B. Leading a super rich life.
C. Achieving what you want. D. Doing something impossible.
29. What plays an important role in your success according to the text?
A. Intelligence. B. Confidence. C. Kindness. D. Wealth.
30. According to the text, man is different from animals in that he has .
A. belief B. success C. freedom D. imagination
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. What Is Success B. No True Success
C. How to Be Successful D. Success Is Reaching a Destination

The mind is a wonderful thing. It’s also excuse-making machine that frequently tries to convince us not to take action that are good for us. If we hadn’t learned about these excuses, or how to overcome them, we would never have succeeded in making these positive changes.
So why does the mind mess with us and make unreasonable excuses? Because the mind wants comfort—that’s the reason. It’s afraid of discomfort, pressure and change. The mind is absorbed in its comfort zone, and anytime we try to stretch that zone too far, for too long, the mind tries hard to get back to “ground zero” at any cost. These damaging excuses, such as “I can’t do it” “It is too hard for me” and so on, are no strangers to our minds.
It seems too difficult at first, so you think you can’t stick to the positive change you’re making. This excuse can be countered (對(duì)抗) by looking at the fact that other people were no more capable than you thought you were. For example, my 60-year-old next-door neighbor finished running a marathon, so I told myself, “If she can do it, so can I!” To tell the truth, the only person who tells you “I can’t” is yourself. If you hear those words echoing (回響) in the back of your mind, turn them off.
Another common excuse is that “I’ve already failed too much.” If you break down, it’s fine, because you are only human. Just don’t stay down; take a rest, and then pick yourself up so you can go to where you’d rather be. As Winston Churchill said, “Success is never final; failure is never deathful. It is courage to continue that counts.”
Some people feel like quitting when they have almost reached their goal, while others gain goals through their efforts until the last second. So make some necessary adjustments to get rid of the bad habit of making excuses. Keep going! No excuses! Think, work, and climb—that’s how you’ll move your life forward.
32. Why does our mind make excuses?
A. To seek comforts rather than suffering. B. To find a solution.
C. To prepare for the difficult times. D. To take a rest.
33. What do the underlined words “ground zero” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The lowest spot. B. The safest place. C. The original place. D. The proper position.
34. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. It’s difficult to complete a marathon. B. People should improve their abilities.
C. It’s wrong to look down upon others. D. People should have positive thoughts.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell us how to make a change.
B. To help us develop a new view of life.
C. To encourage us to leave our comfortable zone.
D. To tell us to stop making excuses and keep fighting.
