Step into a toy store. On your left, there are action figures1 and toy cars. Onyour right, you see craft kits2 and dolls.
Many stores put“boy”toys in one place. They put“girl”toys in another. Theydo this based on stereotypes3. A stereotype is an untrue belief about people orthings. Stereotypes are often unfair. For example, someone might say toy cars areonly for boys. They might say dolls are only for girls. These are stereotypes aboutgender 4. They are not facts.
Many people are taking a stand against gender stereotypes in toys. They supportsome companies’move to mix up toys. They say kids should be able to choose whatthey want to play with. It is healthy for kids to play with many types of things.
Others think toys should still be sorted by gender. They say that makeschoosing toys easier. It is good for toy stores.
What do you think? Should toys on store shelves be separated into girl toys andboy toys?
Here, two kids share their views about this matter.
“Yes.”
“應(yīng)該?!?/p>
“Stores should continue to separate toys aimed at boys from those aimed atgirls. It is helpful. It makes a store more organized. For kids, it’s easier to find whatyou are looking for. Say you’re looking for a superhero toy. You know not to look inthe doll section5. You can find the toy more quickly. Boys and girls can still getwhatever toy they want. If a girl is looking for a Barbie doll, she will know where tofind it. No one is telling her not to play with it.”
“No.”
“不應(yīng)該?!?/p>
“Toy stores should not sort toys by gender. A toy is a toy! A girl might want toplay with a‘boy’toy. Who cares? It’s just a toy! Companies don’t care about you. They care about making money. Sometimes, kids just pretend to like something. They do this to try to fit into a mold6. It’s not healthy for kids to grow up trying tobe someone else. Kids should try everything! If they don’t, they might miss out ona hobby, or even a future job. Let’s let all kids be themselves.”
他們?cè)诤踬嶅X(qián)。
